Yeah go ahead and block mastodon.social, its not going to convince me to move. I don't take kindly to people exerting social pressure on me. Let me, at a future date, decide if and if not to move and where on my own.
@wolfcoder people are so gd patronizing about it, too.
@coda I've seen way too many instances just cut themselves off from most of the federation, go down completely, or engage in lots of infighting. Say what you want about Gargron, at least his administration has been steady (yes I am aware this has been said about fascists before, no it doesn't always mean the person is a fascist) and he does employ transgender moderators and such. Its a hell of a lot better than Twitter.
@wolfcoder Mastodon is a lot better than Twitter for sure.
It's a large improvement to the corporate hellscape there.
But it also has it's own problems. I agree Gargron is far from a fascist, but also. I don't agree in the slightest with his position of "benevolent" dictator for live. I also highly question his motives and raise the argument that large instances like that are a threat to the fediverse.
Though blocking it doesn't do anything at all. Not that Gargron even notices
@maxine the problem I'm addressing is the people blocking mastodon.social and trying to leverage social pressure to get everyone to do the same. This is a big no no.
@wolfcoder Yep and sorry for patronizing.
In these things people quickly get one sided and you are correct, because it is dumb as hell.
Though, I have my own reasons to want to silence/block mastodon.social, which I don't because I see it as it is: Just stupid as hell.
Because seriously.... Gargron won't even notice if a tiny 1,000 accounts instance blocks mastodon.social. (15 accs here)
Even if half the fediverse does so, it's pointless.
That's what I criticize though
@maxine its an issue I feel strongly at heart. One can wander forever, trying to find a place they belong. There's a LOT of groups out there willing to offer that to you.. as long as you're also willing to sacrifice a lot of yourself in the process. Do you choose to be lonely? or hollow?
@wolfcoder I choose to make my own community and provide a save place for others. That's why I started this server.
I started at queer.party, but left to build up this place. This is home. I made it my home and I might not find "interesting people" easily, but I found friends.
And I see the recent changes as not good. You might find "interesting people" better and get found, but it feels /a lot/ like Twitter.
At least here, I can be there for other people though.
@coda also look at me talking to someone from a place called beach.city just fine, I don't have to move to enjoy the federation its almost as though its designed for everyone to be where they feel the most comfortable and yet still be able to talk to their friends.
