Mastodon instance on tooot.im is up and running. Registration will open in a few days as we're still hammering a few issues and learning how to run the site.

@Vigdis How much could there to be to know about running rails and nodejs inside a docker container on a VPS, with a high velocity codebase running production, and an immediate userbase to whom you offer no redundancy and which will expect 24/7 uptime? This is pure alarmism!

About risk profile:
- Mastodon is like email because you can't delete federated toots
- Mastodon is like twitter in that Google's search bots index it, unless your admins robot.txt it away
- Mastodon is like being a teenager because the people that own your instance can see all your private stuff
Have a talk with your admin about their policies.
By default, assume everyone will be able to read your toots forever.

reading a bunch of comments about Mastodon on tech news sites about how it "will never succeed" or will go extinct. Problem is, that defines Mastodon's success in the metrics of Silicon Valley VC. The point of Mastodon does not appear to be a growth -> exit -> brand vehicle strategy that Twitter has been struggling with.
I'm having a good time here. Isn't that success enough?
