Gonna take the whole "Don't scab on prime day" moment to promote one of my favourite alternatives to an amazon product.

The Movie Database is a free community-run alternative to IMDB, unlike amazon's shitty website, TMDB isn't full to bursting with ads, trackers and sluggish JavaScript, and provides an excellent platform for folk to catalogue information about their favorite films without being marketed to.

Please support it, not just on prime day, but any time you need info on a film. Keep information free.

somebody once told me
you're gonna wake up hungry

don't stop to think till they're all gone
i think oh shit you've done it now shaun
so much to eat so much to chow
why did i go for the plums now
i'd better leave a good note
so here's the thing that i wrote

I'm extremely pleased to launch Run Your Own Social: How to run a small social network site for you friends.

This is a guide book to running a small, tight-knit federated social network server. It comes from my year of experience running Friend Camp. It's focused largely on SOCIAL solutions, though it does touch on the technical.

I've tried to keep it technology-neutral, and it should be a pretty easy read for anyone who's been on the fediverse for a while.

from birbsite:

Saw this cool fictional writing system in episode 3 of the anime Kaiba.

What heretical software features can you imagine that would never fly at a growth oriented company but could totally work on free open source social media?

For example, algorithmic timelines are one way to deal with information overload. But what if instead your software offered suggestions for people to unfollow (this person posts a lot and you hardly ever interact with them)? Not necessarily a good idea but it's an idea we could implement that would NEVER happen on Twitter, Facebook, etc

Am I currently holding in my hands a physical copy of the exact paper that invented packet switching as prepared for the United States Air Force?

....maybe

@SquidPresident Jordan was a street cat for nearly 3 years before a shelter picked him up, and my roommate + I adopted him shortly after
I wasn’t there in person, so I asked my roommate to pet a lot of cats + call to report back on our options. Instead of running off, Jordan would calmly but firmly push his paws to my roommate’s hands whenever he tried somewhere Jordan didn’t like - no claws, just preventive
“So his first priority was setting boundaries w/ you?”
“Basically.”
“Yeah he’s the one.”
