My new account is @zacharius

If you think my content has been worth reading then you can follow me there. I likely won't be posting here for now

you can only see the content others on your instance have engaged with. On the major instance nodes they are connected enough that their federated timeline has begun to be conducive to idling.

I say this as someone who spent a huge percentage of their formative years idling on sites like 9gag and reddit. I consider it a huge problem/pitfall of our modern culture/internet and something I still find myself falling into on occasion.

Also you can boost and like posts but you can't see how many others have done the same.

The second reason people lurk is they don't want to engage with content but to idle. They are seeking enough novel information to keep them occupied without engaging with the content in any meaningful way. Mastodon is not conducive to this because their is no single mega firehose of info like R/All on reddit. information is siloed off according to topics and even on the federated timeline ...

short: The Fediverse narrows your vision to a more human scale.

Long: There are 2 main reasons people lurk.

The First is that people feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of the platform they've entered into . If you see a post with with 1,000 upvotes (or retweets) and 10,000 comments you are unlikely to participate. What could I possibly do to contribute to such a conversation. Every possible opinion has already been expressed. In mastodon you only comment to the people you mentioned. ...

Observations from interactions with Asian friends:

They care about not wasting food, while I (and other Americans) care much more about not littering.

curious if anyone what has any input into this plan, especially anyone who has been the victim, or even the aggressor, of violence in the past.

Also if anyone can give me advice as to the legality of committing violence to prevent someone from getting injured that would be helpful. I live in Texas, USA if that helps.

8. Do not give the recording to the cops(or a statement) without the express consent of the victim, unless the victim is incapable of giving consent.

6. If they continue to act violently towards the victim then you will have to decide if you should intervene physically. This will depend on whether or not you believe yourself capable of physically overcoming the aggressor without injury as well as how much harm is being done to the victim.

7. Continue recording until :
- The cops show up
- All involved parties leave
- The victim asks you to leave(you can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped)

5. If they make any physical threats towards you remind them you are armed, recording, and the cops will be there soon. They are unlikely to assault you with those 3 factors in play but worst case you will have to defend yourself.

1. Call the cops, give location, description, and quick assessment.

2. Grap phone and start recording, it is best if you wear a shirt with a breast pocket so that you can record without occupying a hand.

3. Grab Weapon, carry it visibly in your hand.

4. Inform aggresor that you are recording him/her for when the cops show up, which should be soon.

I saw a case of domestic violence today. It happened right outside my apartment. I did nothing but watch for most of it, towards the end I called the cops. I am ashamed I didn't step in and say/do something but I wasn't sure the best option. He was physically more intimidating than me so that was at least part of it.

I have decided that I need a plan so that in the future If a similar thing happens I won't have to spend time thinking about what to do.

When I first learned about invasive species they seemed contrary to my understanding of evolution. If a species is perfectly adapted to its niche, how can a foreign invader so easily come and replace it?

The answer of course is that species do not evolve to perfectly fill a niche, but only change as much as neccesary, and no more, to fill it. Such that if another species that came from a much more competitive environment where it filled a similar role arrives, it can out compete the natives.

Karma's alright though. Don't know why it gets such a bad rap.

After some thought I've decided that whataboutism is the act of making a false equivalence, between your situation and another's, to try and create the perception of a double standard. There is still plenty of room for our personal biases in deciding what constitutes a false equivalence.

Whats the difference between whataboutism and pointing out a double standard? Is there a clear distinction or is it more about whether you disagree with the person? Serious question

Never again will I drink anything with "old fashioned" in it's title. I've come to accept drinking poison as a social pastime, but I want my poison to be diluted enough that I'm not reminded of it with every sip.
