So yeah we just received video FROM MARS of a rocket powered lander dropping a rover safely on the surface.

Video compressed ON MARS with ffmpeg running on Linux.

My Linux-geek and space-geek sides have collided in a happy fusion of nerd glee.

I'm way happier than I probably should be about Linux on Mars. It means so much to me.

I started playing w/ Linux in 1995. Fell in love with it immediately. Kickstarted my UNIX sysadmin career.

It was a tiny hobbyist system back then. "Professionals" didn't take it seriously.

If someone had told me back then that Linux would be ON MARS in 2021, I wouldn't have believed them.

Not to mention that Linux is in the majority of the world's smartphones, embedded devices, and servers.

It truly took off much like the rocket that took Perserverance to Mars.
