@darius this reminds me, the thing you said in your RFC reread about the idiom of socket N for read and socket N+1 for write, that survived long enough to be the reason why the first generation of IP-based application protocols were all assigned odd port numbers. I remember it was surprising when SSH got port 22 and HTTP port 80.
