OSTree allows different versions of any file to coexist no matter how those files where put together, so no need to package everything again like Nix is trying to do. OSTree already powers Flatpak's storage

Then something like Flatpak can point each app to the required version. It's how the storage is deduplicated between Flatpak runtimes and apps.
The concept is not new, Git does the same with text files. Container managers do the same since Docker launch.
In the future Podman and OSTree will even share the storage tech, called ComposeFS.
