My current guess is, that the button is smaller than in the early versions. I keep tapping a small fraction too high, which „opens“ the toot instead of favoring it. Maybe you can add the whitespace above each button to the tappable area?

There's a strange iOS thing where some taps can be gentle and with the corner of a finger (like picking any but the last tab on the Safari tab selector), but that last tab requires a sharp tap with the flat tip of your finger. Happens randomly in other places, but that Safari thing is always a hassle. I've searched and nobody seems to be reporting it.
