We implemented both FEP-e232 as well as the _misskey_quote field (which usually gets checked alongside quoteUrl). Misskey's had quotes for years now, it works great, the rest of the fedi could just implement this and move on. I had actually mentioned Eugen in a post back in Firefish, when they had announced quote posts, to see if they'd be interested in making something compatible (we never got an answer). What Threads is doing makes sense to me, hope Mastodon will just follow the same practice instead of fragment fedi. Sure, all of that should have been standardized from the beginning, but wherever we have prevailing solutions I don't see why we need to look any further (unless there are serious concerns about specific implementations - misskey's quote doesn't seem like such a case).

agreed on that Masto should just take the Misskey implementation and be done with it. I appreciate that theyre now suddenly concerned about consent and safety, but if that was really an actual priority theyd just accept the glitch fork patches for allow-list federation, instead of spending a year building their own implementation for quote posting
