No bending of the wrist to reach it, just move my hand over and usually leave my fingers neutral and drag/click/etc with my middle finger barely touching.
When I am stuck with just a laptop, I tend to use just the top of the trackpad with my thumb, keeping my fingers on home row (unless I am doing a multifinger gesture), which helps on strain.
