@Edent Yeah, the domain setup on Bluesky works really nicely. It's even better when done with DNS, as that way websites don't need any modifications (that might break with the CMS changes).
Really wish that there would be similar account alias features possible in the future also for Mastodon users.

@Edent @neil to be honest, the experience of buying a domain name and using @mastohost seemed at least equally simple to get up and running. It tells you what to put in DNS record etc etc.

@Edent The fediverse is much closer to being able to do the same thing than you'd expect.
Nearly all major implementations support split-domain setups, where the domain in the account handle is different from the one the platform is hosted on: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/advanced/host-account-domain/
The assumption is that this is for the platform provider to decide, and that all users on a platform domain must have the same handle domain. So caching is done accordingly.
But no standard says it has to be done this way.

Users could then enter their custom domain during account registration and it would be verified using WebFinger, like it already works for split-domain setups.
Letting users change handle domains for existing accounts is conceivable too, but would mean unraveling many more implementation assumptions.
