I don't blame them, not everyone who is keen to set up a little community has the chops to build and host a website and forum.
I definitely do agree that a lot of what is currently on slack and discord would be better served by forums.
And a little different, but software/SaaS community support forums really should be properly searchable and open-on-the-web forums, not discords.

It's terrible for searching, so people just end up asking the same questions over and over, and it becomes a mess of parallel discussions (2-3 people having different conversations in the same chat at the same time).
I guess the reason we ended up like this is because a lot of people are reluctant to sign up to \"another\" forum, and won't actively use more than one or two forums anyway. Since people already have Discord they are automatically more available there. And I guess that's the only advantage Discord has: You can follow several communities from one place.
I wish federation between forums had become the standard instead. It would have been so much better. Maybe it's not too late, and we can still do it though? 😅

I’ve never got more than half way through the Slack T&Cs without finding something that I’m unwilling to agree to. If more people had a policy of not signing up to a service without reading their entire T&Cs document then things like Slack would die very quickly.

I use Discord as an asynchronous communication platform with my family and also happily use it to keep in touch with my friends who share my interests just fine. It's much more about the expectation of immediacy.
