There is a lot of conflicting information out there when it comes to the best text to background contrast ratio for optimal accessibility. Generally, higher contrast is better, of course, but for people with dyslexia, a too bright background (e.g. black text on white) can also appear dazzling and thus harder to read.
Do you know of any reliable and “quotable” resources on this topic?

- Use dark coloured text on a light (not white) background
- Consider alternatives to white backgrounds for paper, computer and visual aids such as whiteboards. White can appear too dazzling.

I don't struggle with dyslexia, but for me it's also a question of the ambient light in the room. For instance, using dark mode in a dark room, full white text can be absolutely blinding on a deep black background. Less contrast is way easier on the eyes in that situation.
For some reason, I sometimes feel the need to change reading font between light and dark modes… Serifs don't do too well in dark mode IMO.

They opened each web page, copied all the text, pasted it into a Word document, made the background pale yellow, the text brown, changed the font to comic sans (yes, comic sans) then upped the font size to 18 point.
Now they could read it.

Even then, browsers had useful features for users to set minimum font sizes, preferred fonts. IE6 allowed user-specified stylesheets*, which overrode author styles.
They just never knew they could do that, so did it manually for every page.
Point is, I think: you can never possibly anticipate the needs of every single person who may one day come across your website or app.
So make sure they can make it work for them.

Out IT bods had tried all sorts of solutions – mostly physical filters that sat in front of your screen. Seems #overlays are not a new idea ....
Anyway, I listened to her problems and wrote a custom stylesheet with her. Then applied that to her browser – probably IE7 by then.
It took a couple of hours of my time, but changed her working life.

It’s just the maximum number (21:1) as black and white have the most contrast. So I think they interpret that as “optimal”. Also this might be true for print stuff, but on the web, it’s just the most contrast you can get, which says nothing qualitatively.
