I'm assuming elderly people are more expensive customers, as a health provider. From a stricly financial point of view, a measure that allows you to discriminate them while calling it a technical limitation sounds quite tempting.

I really had the feeling this was a result of the medical company just wanting to be able to make advertising money off of their patients in addition to their fees and insurance billing but this actually seems very plausible. Perhaps it's both.

Over here there is a legal requirement to provide insurance to everybody, and thus to accomodate people who can't or won't use smart phones. * the clinic is probably not a shareholder of Apple or Google and gains no market share by the bundling

Looking at the medical devices, and the tying is done on a number of levels.
There's the tying of the phone hardware to the phone OS.
There's the tying of the phone app to the medical devices.
There's the limiting of the acceptable comm's systems between the app and the user,
ie. if you don't have a email address that comes from one of the major providers then Google will start treating all of your replies as spam.

That last one is why all of the major tech companies are being sued, as within specific industry sectors and market niches, they've been trying to set up cartels to block out new competition.
The #RightToRepair campaigns against the John Deere company's enshittification of their tractors that penalises the tractor's owners, is another example within a different industry sector.

Forcing patients to give up their rights via the use of Software Licences that are attached to mandated software, gives the healthcare companies another work-around, to denying their patient's legal rights, by reducing their access to the public courts through the use of \"Forced Arbitration\" agreements hidden in the software licenses.

That article is strictly Apple. If @lrvick โs healthcare provider were to force Apple only, then I think it would be a more viable case of tying although still there would be the hurdle that the healthcare provider likely has different ownership than Apple.
I would love to find a tying case made in a situation where a supplier forces a choice of Google or Apple because the world is littered with that scenario right now.

It's also worth remembering that most of the mobile apps are just a html/web interface which uses a click-agreement wrap-around, so they can't be legally reverse-engineered, so security through obscurity.
The bonus for the service providers is that they can require the mandated use of arbitration rather than the courts through any changes in the ToS agreements.
Don't agree, and you don't get to use the service.

Do interact before doing a follow request or send me a DM immediately before sending the follow request; you also want to have a filled-in profile and written some stuff yourself. This is so I know youโre not a bot or marketer (otherwise Iโll have to judge from the info available to me); Iโve rejected quite a few follow requests as I couldnโt make heads nor tails of the accountโฆ or, in some cases, there was just no shared interest apparent, and โdo I know you?โ drew blanks.

Dogs, systemd advocates and SJWs (I have recently been informed that there now are people who identify as SJWs but are not intended here and with whom I actually have a lot in common; this means the mid-late-2010s SJWs and wording police that descended on OSS with their CoCs) are not welcome. I donโt come here for deep social discussions or something, so donโt bother me with these, nor shudderโฆ politicsโฆ (but I have since learnt that requesting a politics-free space is no good way to run a โbarโ these days and that we do have to insist on doing things right). And Iโll refuse follows from people who endorse ML/LLM (so-called โAIโ) and/or content regurgitated by them, since the latter is almost always illegal, and it all has multiple major problems. Especially ecologically, โAIโ/LLM use is uncongruable withโฆ basically any kind of belief. Yes, shame on its users (once they should know better).
My feed will include RSS posts from other activity feeds of mine (posted via daily cronjob, not in real time, so their post timestamp is irrelevant) as well as boosts and no CWs. Boosts and quotes are not my own work and belong to the original authors. I often boost posts I do not understand, e.g. in foreign languages, just because the picture is nice or something. And only one of my clients allows me to set the posting language, unfortunately.
I run my own single-user plus bots (so far, but I might admit personal acquaintances if they really want) instance of GtS so some tech trouble may be expected. No custom โemojiโ (really, colon-magic-strings, which I loathed on other platforms already; they should call them stickers, to not be confused with proper Emoji, which are bad enough by themselvesโฆ), but longer posts and Markdown formatting. (I hate Markdown, but itโs better than no formatting, I suppose?) It is not permitted to copy or mirror the content from here elsewhere, especially not widening the visibility scope; this explicitly includes screenshotting.
Iโm personnel to ฤara๐โโฌ (a rescue cat, FIP carrier and FIV+ but sheโs so lovely). Black cats (even with white nose, socks and bikini) are the best! We also rescued Malik๐โโฌ from the streets in mid-January 2024, heโd been out and fed by locals for about 14โ16 months after about 5โ7 months of family life, and we have since been giving him a good life and ฤara๐โโฌ a โlittleโ brother (whoโs grown to be more than two times her size, so her amusement is limited). Heโs now staying with us indefinitely as well.

I don't really carry my phone around with me unless I need to phone someone while not at home (which isn't often, it can wait, and other folk can wait for me).
Your phone can be nicked or damaged and it's got all that info on it and is big and expensive and everything, and it's always tempting to fiddle with it, or take photos rather than do things unmediated.
But the strangest things are suddenly not possible. There was a burger van which refused to serve me the other day. I was there, they had spare burgers, I had a kind of money they accepted, but they wouldn't serve me because I didn't have the app, literally just to order the food, and I didn't have my phone.
They're all trivial things -- I can always try to remember my phone if I know it's going to happen -- but it's weird.
My phone spends most of its time plugged into the wall at home for when I have to interact with these weird companies (until I find a competitor!)
