I came out in 2009 and the first step was getting diagnosed with a disease saying you were trans.
Yes, being trans was once a disease. It wasn't that long ago, in fact. Getting diagnosed with GID was a prerequisite to getting treatment. And most psychiatrists would try some form of CBT or whatever to convince you you weren't trans. Outcomes were predictably poor.
