The fine 1972 giallo So Sweet, So Dead begins with a very dead naked girl. Cop Farley Granger's problem is the victim was a general's wife so he has to tread carefully. More murders follow among the decadent rich. The ending packs a real punch.

Just Jaeckin’s The Last Romantic Lover (1978) may be his best film. A circus performer enters a contest to find the country's most romantic man. A strange, magical, entrancing, insanely romantic film with hints of screwball comedy.

Snapshot is a 1979 Australian thriller which is a lot more interesting than its reputation suggests. The surprises here are not the plot twists but the ways in which the characters just don’t behave quite like conventional thriller characters.

Clint Eastwood’s superb directorial debut Play Misty For Me (1971). Classic suspenser/erotic thriller. Amazing performance by Jessica Walter. I love that Eastwood did not cast himself as a conventional hero. Just a regular guy out of his depth.

The original Airport (1970) is quite different from the sequels. It isn't a disaster movie as such. It's an aviation thriller (and a good one) but mostly it's a typical Ross Hunter-produced melodrama. And it's thoroughly enjoyable melodrama.

Savage Three (Fango bollente, 1975), a nasty little movie combining poliziottesco and psycho killer movie elements. Superbly chilling performance by Joe Dallesandro combining evil and innocence. Great movie.

The 1976 King Kong remake is woefully inferior to the original. A trainwreck but an interesting one. Dull characters but great visuals and nicely perverse eroticism. Jessica Lange is no Fay Wray but she isn't that bad and she's cute and sexy.

Borsalino (1970), a gorgeous-looking hugely entertaining French gangster film set in the 30s with Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo oozing charisma and sexiness and coolness. Don’t overthink this movie. Just wallow in the style.

The Fifth Floor (1978) is a psychiatric terror film. A girl is locked in a mental hospital after a suicide attempt but it was really attempted murder. She's treated as if she's crazy but she isn't. No-one believes her. Effectively chilling.

Jean-Pierre Melville’s Un Flic (1972), perhaps neonoir but more existentialist crime film. Alain Delon is a cop, there are two heists, but it's an art film, a coldly intellectual exercise in absurdism, existentialism, alienation and isolation.

Syndicate Sadists (1975) is a 1975 Umberto Lenzi poliziottesco that's really a lone wolf hero vigilante movie. Tomas Milian stars and he has a personal score to settle. There's a kidnapping. Not Lenzi's best but Milian's charisma caries it.

The Devil’s Possessed (1974) is a Paul Naschy movie based very loosely on the crimes of the infamous Gilles de Rais. Set in 15th century France it combines swashbuckling adventure with plenty of horror. Naschy is deliciously cruel and evil.

Looking for Mr Goodbar (1977), a failure but an interesting one which misses the point of the source novel rather badly. It's at least an attempt to deal with female sexuality but loses its nerve. Diane Keaton is great. Flawed but worth a look.

Scream of the Demon Lover (1970) is a well executed Spanish-Italian gothic horror/gothic romance movie. It has the right gothic look, it has energy and flair, some nudity and plenty of hints of strange sexual kinks. Plus a mad scientist. Bliss!

Massimo Dallamano's 1976 poliziottesco Colt 38 Special Squad concerns an elite four-man squad of motorcycle-riding cops and a personal vendetta between a cop and a gang boss. A stylish but very violent very dark movie with fine action scenes.

Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975), the adventures of an American girl in Mexico. A nice girl, except that she seduces men, kills them and drinks their blood. Maybe she's a vampire or maybe she's just eccentric. Weird arty excellent Mexican horror.
