Als der Song fertig ist, sind alle begeistert – nur sein Label nicht: „Leonard, we know you're great, we just don't know if you're any good.“ Später wird es ein Welthit, und auch jüngere Menschen kennen es aus „Shrek“, gesungen von John Cale. Nicht nur „Hallelujah“ wird ein Welthit. Cohen muss viel Geld verdient haben in seinem Leben – und er hat viel verloren. Mitte der 90er betrügt ihn seine Managerin um 5 Millionen Dollar. Cohen geht mit Mitte 70 nochmal auf Tour, um Geld einzuspielen. Und startet nochmal richtig durch. „Der Moment, in dem du alles umarmst und dir sagst: Schau, ich verstehe rein gar nichts – Hallelujah!“ (Leonard Cohen).
