"There it goes: a customer pressing question makes its way to the documentation channel of your company. Someone suggests adding a question and its answer to a doc, perhaps an FAQ section somewhere. Folks will find it, search engines will rejoice, and support will have something to link to, even if it’s just a fragile question lost in the middle of other unrelated doubts.

That’s the moment where, as a tech writer, you must stop and intercept the thought of creating an FAQ. The goal isn’t to eradicate question-and-answer formats from the face of the planet (that’d be cruel), but to ensure information is organized thoughtfully and sustainably. After all, great documentation answers questions before users even need to ask them.

So, instead of FAQing things up, consider any of the following alternatives:"

More often than not, technical writers pale and stagger at the sight of hefty, unsorted FAQ sections, as if they were beholding a writhing mass of primal chaos. Others value their pragmatic qualities: FAQs, they say, lower the bar to contribution and are good fuel for LLMs and search engines. My opinion is that FAQs pose a problem only when there’s no strategy around their usage.

More #Etsy stupidity. Every time I have a #problem with Etsy, I contact their #support (with great difficulty), and after re-explaining things a few times to the drones who are just pasting irrelevant #canned responses into their replies, I finally get across to them that there is an #issue their #FAQs don't address.

At which point they cannot solve it. Of course. But it seems like they *also* give me a new #problem without a #solution.
