Exploring Gunbuster’s Roots in Shojo - Dawn H. explores Gainax's 1988 OVA, Gunbuster, and the way the series draws from classic shojo works. In particular, she looks at how the series derived many of its beats and themes from 1973 tennis anime, Aim for the Ace!
The Daicon IV Opening Animation from 1983 which was set (without authorization) to the song Twilight by Electric Light Orchestra.
It was created by 12 'amateur' animators who would go to form the popular anime studio Gainax. It features a lot of pop culture references both japanese and western. Really kicks into gear about 2 minutes in but whole thing is pure old-school anime animation goodness we don't see much of anymore.

Hopefully the various IP (Gunbuster, Diebuster, FLCL, TTGL, etc) can be clawed back and all ends up with the original creators and rightful owners.
