Dieser Meilenstein markiert einen wichtigen Schritt auf dem Weg zum Asteroidensystem Didymos, wo es neue Erkenntnisse für die Entwicklung zuverlässiger Methoden zur Asteroidenabwehr zu gewinnen gilt. Während des Vorbeiflugs (Swing-by) nutzt Hera die Schwerkraft des Mars, um ihre Flugbahn zu optimieren.

"Hera est la première mission de défense planétaire de l'ESA. Elle se dirige vers une cible unique parmi les 1,3 million d'astéroïdes connus de notre système solaire. Le 26 septembre 2022, la mission DART de la NASA a effectué le premier test de déviation d'astéroïde de l'humanité en s'écrasant sur la lune Dimorphos, de la taille d'une grande pyramide. Il en a résulté un déplacement de son orbite autour de l'astéroïde principal Didymos, de la taille d'une montagne"...
