Tek aEvl<p>Every federal agency in the U.S. is currently trying to figure out how to purge forbidden words from documents posted online, in a desperate attempt to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order to purge “DEI” from every facet of American life. And nowhere is that effort more bizarre than the National Science Foundation, which is currently combing through websites and research papers for a long list of words that include <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=female" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>female</span></a>, <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=disability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>disability</span></a>, and <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=LGBT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LGBT</span></a>, among a host of others.</p><p>The review comes in response to a memo sent out Jan. 29 from the Office of Personnel Management, written by acting director Charles Ezell. Every agency has interpreted the memo a little differently, but at NSF they’ve compiled a list of words that need to be found, which will initiate a review to see if it’s allowed.</p><p>According to the Washington Post, a word like <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a> appearing will get the content flagged, but it will need to be manually reviewed to determine if the context of the word is related to a forbidden topic under the anti-DEI order. Trump and his fellow fascists use terms like DEI to describe anything they don’t like, which means that the word <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a> is on the forbidden list while <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=men" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>men</span></a> doesn’t initiate a review.</p><p>Straight white men are seen through the <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=MAGA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MAGA</span></a> worldview as the default human and thus wouldn’t be suspicious and in need of a review. Any other type of identity is inherently suspect.</p><p>Some of the terms that are getting flagged are particularly eyebrow-raising in light of the Nazi salutes that Trump supporters have been giving since he took office. For example, the term <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=hateSpeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hateSpeech</span></a> will get a paper at NSF flagged for further review. Redefining terms like <a href="https://www.urbanmind.net/search?tag=hateSpeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hateSpeech</span></a> is obviously part of the fascist project.</p><p>Darby Saxbe, a professor at the University of Southern California, tweeted the list of banned words on Monday, including a decision tree she says had been sent to all program Nothing these anti-racist writers said or did actually threatened the power structure in America.</p><p>Diversity politics has long been an elite project — a way for major corporations or government offices to whitewash themselves with a few token hires or irrelevant seminars or programs that send the signal to America’s liberals that they’re on the Right Side of History. But there’s a reason that almost every Fortune 500 company in America was blasting out diversity messaging during the summer of 2020 and not, say, putting their lobbying muscle into passing universal paid leave, guaranteed health care, or decent housing for everyone. Diversity politics has given them a way to painlessly massage the consciences of liberal America without upsetting the power structure at all.</p><p>Which is why Trump’s war on DEI, whatever the motivations and whatever the collateral damage, is actually doing the left a favor. For too long, well-meaning progressives have wrongly believed that diversity was the goal of the civil rights movement.</p><p>King really meant it when he said he didn’t want people to be judged by the color of their skin, and he went much further in one 1961 document. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"What philosophers sometimes call “political epistemology” is the area of intellectual inquiry that attempts to understand and evaluate these interactions between politics, knowledge, ignorance, and misperceptions. Most of my recent published research and articles on this blog fall within this area. For example, I’ve written about:</p><p>- How group allegiances distort political cognition (e.g., here, here, and here)</p><p>- How political tribes coordinate to promote, protect, and rationalise shared narratives (e.g., here, here, here, and here)</p><p>- In what ways political thought and communication are biased (e.g., here and here)</p><p>- The sources of political ignorance and misperceptions (and, more puzzlingly, knowledge) (here and here)</p><p>- Why many influential analyses of our political-epistemic problems in terms of “misinformation” and “disinformation” are confused and objectionable (e.g., here, here, here, and here)</p><p>Recently, I’ve also had the chance to design an advanced undergraduate course on ‘Politics, truth, and ideology’. The course only has seven weeks of content, meaning it must be highly selective in which topics it covers. Moreover, it’s intended for philosophy students, so it mostly ignores relevant empirical research in political psychology and social science. Nevertheless, I hope it provides a helpful introduction to some foundational issues and debates that might interest some readers.</p><p>In this post, I will briefly describe some core underlying themes of the course and the main topics and debates it covers. Solving the problem of disparities for people in the lower rungs of the job market doesn’t solve their basic dilemmas, because for them the problem is the job itself, the quality of the job itself, the availability of the jobs themselves.</p><p>So if you agree, as most people do, that identity politics has to do with disparities and representation, then the problem with identity politics is not that it doesn’t touch the lives of minorities. It definitely helps them somewhat. But it’s hardly a solution. It most directly touches the lives of a tiny elite section of minorities.
