7/9 – Customizing #Android settings on the #booxpalma has definitely been quite a learning curve, after only using Apple stuff for the past 15 years, but I'm getting there.

Why on earth do I need to "unfreeze" apps, and keep enabling them in the playstore for them to not dissapear?

Using the Niagara launcher removes a lot of clutter from the default apps lying around. And I was actually a bit surprised to see that I could connect the airpods without much hassle, for audiobooks with #librofm.

m4b-tool is a great tool - weird that it's nix or docker (dependency hell with audio libraries, I blame the libraries) but amazing that it;

1) works
2) has smart defaults

I legally own an an unencrypted audiobook copy of Tress of the Emerald Sea as an m4b and one of my kids is old enough for it but his player only does mp3s - this makes easy work of splitting to mp3s =)

With running amok and 's owner failing to impress in resisting Trump, I'm looking for an alternative, nonUSA source.

Anyone done background research into: (Sweden)?
Or (Canada with Japanese parent company)?
, CEO of Storytel?
(Kobo's owner)?

is AIUI unfortunately currently a US company.
I note too that Storytel currently has a US company listed on its EN webpage "Storytel Audiobooks USA LLC".

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley is on sale at LibroFM.

A wonderful military SF page turner without the Jingoism that turns me off many books in the sub-genre. With a strong anti capitalist core.

Told from the point of view of a grunt that finds herself unstuck in time, there is much more to a mission than just the fighting. We slowly build a picture of the world through the mosaic of Dietz's disjointed experiences.

A time travel novel so good the Science Fiction Book Review Podcast reviewed it twice and gave it a rare 5 star rating.

Libro.fmThe Light Brigade Audiobook on Libro.fmNAMED BY PUBLISHERS WEEKLY AS A BEST BOOK OF 2019 “Passionately brutal, fierce, and furious in voice and pace. It’s a particularly cinematic experience of war, Full Metal Jacket meets Edge of Tomorrow.” —The New York Times From the Hugo Award–winning author of The Stars Are Legion comes a science fiction thriller about a futuristic war during...

Weirdly, when I logged into my #Audible account this morning to start the move to #LibroFM there was a new book in my library. One I hadn’t purchased or added.

It was “Reading the Bible again for the first time”

I had the option to remove it, which I did. But why the fuck was it even in there? I’m not even Christian!

Moved over from #Audible to #LibroFM this morning.

I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they repeat the ebook shit show with audiobooks. And now I get to support local book stores as well. Wish I knew about them sooner.

Moved from GoodReads to TheStoryGraph as well recently. And getting ebooks from Kobo and Hive (who also support local book stores).

Need some hope in darker political times? Try the book I just finished: A #solarpunk, #hopepunk #novel of the #climate emergency, endorsed by Naomi Klein, Bill McKibben, Rebecca Solnit and Kim Stanley Robinson and written (and if you want the #audiobook, narrated) by Cory Doctorow @pluralistic A post-MAGA-near future Science Fiction craphound.com/category/lostcau Just what #MHFA (mental health first aid) recommends.

There are many alternatives to Audible!

#LibroFM works on a credit system. Your subscription gets you one or two books per month and your subscription supports an independent bookshop of your choosing. You can also buy books from them, including ones on sale.

Many authors <cough, hello> sell books, including audiobooks direct to readers on or websites.

Your local library lends audiobooks … and authors get fairly paid for them.

Got a really nice email from #librofm after I submitted a request:

"Thank you for supporting Books and Crannies through Libro.fm! I'm afraid that audiobook is currently available exclusively on Amazon's Audible and they prevent bookshops and libraries from offering it at the moment. I'm sorry about that. "

Sometimes you can't avoid AMZN but when you can it feels good.

My favorite #audiobooks from half a year on #Librofm:
- Jerusalem by Simon Sebag Montefiore
- Red Rising by Pierce Brown
- The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
- Relight My Fire by C.K. McDonnell

Do you have any recommendations for the next six months?

I used to love #downpour.com but for a year or two now I can't seem to find a book I want that I can actually buy with my credits ($15 each). They have books broken into serializations with about 3-10 hours of audio per credit, and tons of "premium" books (i.e. any I've searched for this year) that you can't buy with credits. It's the #netflix of #audiobooks.

And now they took $30 from me. I'm out. #librofm exists.
