It's been a while since I drew something from the owl house so I decided to draw Lumity I hope you like it
My contributions to #canvas / #canvas2024:
- Lemmy.zip Logo: My headliner for this year is again the logo for #Lemmy .zip, my home instance in the #threadiverse. I chose the spot and placed the first pixels, but it was a team effort with at least 15 others contributing
- Before starting the Lemmy.zip logo, I also started the #AreciboMessage. I made the template, but the idea was from @the_dopamine_fiend and I only drew the first 3 "lines" of data, the rest was all done by others
- I wanted to do something with @theowlhouse, but didn't think of that until the second day when it was too late for something big. Instead, I just made a little mini Grom Fight #Lumity for my #TheOwlHouse rep
- With time running short, I decided to use some spare pixels in the final hour to make a ghost amogus. You'd think white-on-white wouldn't be seen, but @ArieTheFloof noticed and placed the last two pixels
- Lastly, a little mini #PerryThePlatypus from #PhineasAndFerb, because why not?
Last night, I took my wife on a date, making the most of our child's sleepover. Over burgers, we delved into my recent fascination with Lumity (Luz and Amity from The Owl House). As a romance enthusiast in both cartoons and anime, I've experienced countless love stories, but Lumity resonated with me on a much deeper level.
One of my favorite romance anime series is "The Dangers in My Heart" (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu), where a socially awkward teenage boy falls for a model and actress who is also an unapologetic foodie. This anime had me in tears almost every other episode, especially in season 2. Despite this, I didn’t feel the same attachment to the couple as I do with Lumity. Lumity is the first fictional couple I've felt genuinely connected to.
At first, I thought my fascination with Lumity might stem from it being the first same-sex couple I’d seen in a show since starting my transition. However, this theory has two flaws. First, my wife and I are avid fans of Yuri (lesbian manga), and we've watched at least four Yuri anime series since I began my transition. Second, before Lumity captured my heart, I hadn’t watched The Owl House beyond a few episodes my child showed me. It was Lumity that sparked my interest in TOH. My wife often says, "There might not be a criteria or pattern... the mind knows and when it happens, it happens." This rang true for me; my fascination with Lumity arrived unexpectedly and beautifully.
We also talked about the liberating experience of taking testosterone blockers. Before puberty, I mentally identified as a girl but was forced to present as a boy. Male puberty was incredibly challenging. I felt emotional attraction towards girls but was uncomfortable with how boys objectified them. This discomfort followed me into adulthood.
Now, with the help of testosterone blockers, my transition, and therapy, I no longer feel compelled to conform to male norms. Throughout my life, I mimicked the behavior of those around me due to my social awkwardness, even adopting harmful male behaviors—a choice I deeply regret. Thankfully, I've begun to see the women around me, both real and fictional, through a different lens. I admire them for their thoughts, feelings, actions, and achievements. I’ve rejected the involuntary objectification and sexualization, especially in fiction where it adds no value to the story. Although I still have many mental barriers to overcome, I'm relieved that those are finally coming down.

I discovered Disney's show, The Owl House, through my daughter, who adores it. While anime is typically my go-to, I watched a few episodes with her. The story centers around a teenage girl, Luz Noceda, who accidentally ends up in a demon world instead of a "Reality Check" summer camp. Luz, seen as quirky and distracted at school, gets a chance to become a witch, facing various dangers and making new friends. It's a Disney-style isekai tale, highlighting Luz's Latin American heritage through her use of Spanish phrases, which may be why my daughter feels so connected to the show.
A few weeks ago, I was browsing a lesbian women's Facebook group where someone asked for favorite sapphic couples, or "ships". The first one that came to mind was "Korrasami" from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, a favorite of my wife. Another suggestion was "Catradora" from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Each suggestion included images of the couples sharing intimate moments. Then, I saw a picture of two girls standing close together, holding hands, with affectionate expressions. I recognized them as Luz and Amity Blight and learned their ship name: Lumity.
Curious, I searched YouTube for "Lumity moments" and was quickly captivated by their story. Watching them evolve from rivals to friends to something more was utterly enchanting. I couldn't resist sharing my newfound obsession with my wife, who was delighted by my first foray into shipping, another sign of my gender psychological transition. We had a playful conversation about the nature of shipping and my past interests, which brought me a sense of gender euphoria.
During the particularly tough time I am going through, I decided to dive into The Owl House starting from season one. The episode "Enchanting Grom Fight" left me in tears of pure happiness. Luz's bravery and the deepening bond between her and Amity were exactly what I needed to see. Watching this series has brought immense joy and emotional catharsis, especially in the midst of recent challenges.
Today, watching the show with my daughter and wife, I was overjoyed to see Amity kiss Luz on the cheek and eventually ask her out. These moments, filled with genuine emotion, have helped me navigate through my own feelings. While my ADHD often leads to intense periods of hyperfocus, I hope this connection with Lumity is more than just a fleeting interest. For now, I'm cherishing every moment of this magical journey.

Long time without drawing something from The Owl House and this time I have to draw lumity I hope you like it
Love that The Owl House was cancelled and now they're re-airing the series with promos referencing Lumity.
1. When did literal internet fanfiction ship names enter the mainstream enough to be used as marketing?
2. Order a revival series you cowards.
