It’s absurd that a handful of swing ridings in one region (the 905) might once again decide the entire election outcome for a country as vast and diverse as Canada.

This is the rot of first past the post in action.

Proportional representation would ensure every region—and every voter—matters equally.

CTVNews · The 905 could determine whether Canadians see a majority or minority government. Here is why.The 905 has long been a battleground for Liberal and Conservative politicians and during the upcoming federal election, all eyes will be on the seat-rich region.

Officers of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections have secured a major debate on Proportional Representation for general elections

This will be taking place in the Commons Chamber on Thursday 30 January.

#ukge24: The low vote for Labour compared with number of seats is not a bug but a feature of First Past The Post systems. You only need to win each seat by one vote, so if you are directing resources you transfer to areas where extra effort might push them over the line. #PRNow

Incredibly, our new Government was supported by only around one in three voters.

But First Past the Post turned a third of the votes into a landslide of seats.

2024 must be the last election under the broken and unfair First Past the Post system.

Now is the moment when public interest in the voting system spikes.

Just remember this, you're going to hate Keir Starmer and the Labour Party in 2038 when they're struggling towards the end of their 4th term. You can thank our first past the post electoral system for that.

The only realistic way that the incumbent Tory MP for West Worcestershire, Dame Harriet Baldwin, can be unseated is by an election pact among the progressive opposition. In 2005 the Liberal Democrats came within a couple of thousand votes of the then MP, Sir Michael Spicer (who incidentally claimed expenses for repairing his helipad and installing a chandelier). At the last election Baldwin captured 61% of the votes cast, and it's a very safe seat.

I'm appealing to the West Worcestershire Liberal Democrats and Labour (and the thriving Green party) to please do the sensible thing, swallow your pride, and unite behind a single progressive candidate. Even though your leaders are too stubborn or self-assured to cooperate at a national level, please show some common sense and real leadership at a local level.

Edit: I should add that the various tactical voting websites are of no help here, because Labour and the LibDems are too close to call. However, if their votes were combined (along with the Greens) it should be possible to unseat a prominent backbencher. Without clear guidance as to who to vote for, or a situation where there is only one progressive opposition candidate, it'll almost certainly remain a Tory seat. The priority should be to get rid of the Tory and to get rid of #FPTP.

Doomscrollin'.

Can't get enthusiastic about Labour doing well in local elections. They've been institutionally captured by transphobes, and have also swung as far to the right as they can in an effort to be more Tory than the Tories. Didn't vote yesterday as not registered because staying under shitty family's radar, but can't honestly see the point given the choices here in 2024. We need .
