Interesting detail: Already back then, I had some nostalgia for Windows 3.1. If you look closely, you’ll notice that I used a modified version of RIVETS.BMP (or NIETEN.BMP, as it was called in the German edition) as the background for my homepage.

Another screenshot from my early Linux days:

Running SUSE Linux 9.0, listening to music with XMMS, texting on ICQ with Kopete, emailing with Thunderbird, and browsing my personal homepage in Firebird.

And it looks like I was trying to compile a kernel module for my server’s IDE RAID PCI card…

Back to the CPU fan.

A bit of isopropyl alcohol inside the fan helped dissolve the old hardened lubricant residues and the fan started moving easily again. However, when powered, it would only vibrate. A drop of fine machine oil and it now spins like new!

Attention Retro Gamers,

I have attempted to play "Prisoner of Ice" on my Pocket 386.

First problem: No Sound. This could be fixed by buying a PicoGUS.

Second problem: Game loops forever, displaying the intro. Game specs at:
mobygames.com/game/376/prisone
say 486DX, but I only have a 386SX. The intro animations are not choppy. Maybe the lack of a FP coprocessor?

Has anyone tried this? Please share, TIA.

The next problem with the #PentiumPro is more serious: the disk drive sometimes makes loud repeated clicks, as if it was trying to imitate an old alarm clock.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the reason why the computer ended up in the trash.

Also, I couldn't get the the PS/2 mouse to work despite the jumper being set correctly. It could be caused by the RTC battery being dead (there is an option in the BIOS about PS/2 mouse), but I'll need to investigate a bit more.

The first two problems quickly appeared when I powered the machine on.

First, the fan of the CPU cooler doesn't spin at all and is even hard to move by hand. Easy fix as I have a spare one lying around.

Second problem is more annoying: after nearly 30 years, the battery in the Dallas DS12887A RTC module is completely dead! I feel safer with a plain replacement than hacking the module open with the Dremel tool to attach an external battery.
