Really, if you can, worthwhile to listen. Very good background on the insidious GOP 'SAVE' act & Trump's EO attacking our right to vote.

#Maine: As Maine eyes voter ID law, Trump order tightens federal registration rules

by Caroline LeCour, March 27, 2025

"As Maine voters eye a statewide voter ID proposal, a new #ExecutiveOrder from President Donald #Trump is adding another layer to the conversation around election integrity and access.

"The order signed Wednesday would require proof of #USCitizenship to register for #FederalElections and mandate that all ballots be received by Election Day—a change from the current system in many states that allows ballots postmarked by Election Day to count if received later.

"Though separate from Maine's voter ID proposal—which addresses identification at the polls rather than registration—some in the state see a common goal.

"'This is a policy, different policies to strengthen our elections, to increase confidence of voters to participate in our democratic process,' #AlexTitcomb, of the grassroots organization The Dinner Table, [a #Conservative #PAC] said. The group spared Maine's voter ID proposal, which was certified by the Maine Secretary of State earlier this year.

"Critics argue that requiring documents many voters may not readily have—especially those whose names may not match across forms of ID—could discourage legitimate voters from participating.

"'A lot of married women have changed their names, some of their documents don't match up,' Jen Lancaster, with the League of Women Voters of Maine, said. 'Maybe they don't have the perfect document, and they get turned away. That's what #VoterSuppression is. It's eligible voters being denied their right to vote.'

"Lancaster says the executive order is likely to face legal challenges, echoing concerns from national #VotingRights organizations."

#Trump seeks to mandate proof of #citizenship in #VoterRegistration

"Only about half of Americans have a U.S. passport, and only five states currently offer enhanced driver's licenses that show proof of citizenship."

By Jude Joffe-Block, March 26, 20251:09 AM ET

Excerpt: "#VotingRights advocates, however, warn outdated databases can erroneously list naturalized citizens as noncitizens. Past efforts by states to purge noncitizens from voter rolls have sometimes swept up eligible U.S. citizens.

"The executive order also seeks to stop states from counting mail or absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day but received after by withholding funding from states that allow such ballots to be counted.

"Proof of citizenship requirement

"Ahead of the 2024 election, Trump and his allies made baseless claims about the threat of noncitizens voting in large numbers.

"The current federal voter registration form asks registrants to swear, under penalty of perjury, that they are U.S. citizens and eligible to vote, and to provide a driver's license number, state ID number or Social Security number. Those who attempt to vote illegally can face prison time, fines or deportation. Past audits and studies have shown such cases are incredibly rare.

"Yet Republicans have made requiring documentary proof of citizenship a policy priority. The executive order borrows heavily from the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, known as the #SAVEAct, a Republican-backed bill. House Republicans have signaled that they intend to pass it in their chamber but it faces difficult odds in the Senate.

"The executive order shows #Trump isn't waiting for Congress. But legal experts say that he does not have the authority through #ExecutiveOrder to make such changes, and the order conflicts with existing #FederalVotingLaw.

"'It's illegal at many different levels,' said Sean Morales-Doyle, the voting rights director at the #BrennanCenter for Justice, a nonprofit that studies and advocates for voting rights. The order directs the #ElectionAssistanceCommission, a small, independent bipartisan agency, to make various changes, including to the federal #VoterRegistration form, but Morales-Doyle said the president can't tell that commission what to do.

"Requiring documentary proof of #citizenship would radically upend voter registration if such a mandate were to take effect.

"The order is explicit that applies to anyone who uses the federal voter registration form. What is less clear is if the order would also pressure states to require showing proof of citizenship with state registration forms, such as by #WithholdingFunds.

"The order only lists a limited number of ways to prove U.S. citizenship. The options given are a U.S. passport, an ID that complies with the #RealIDAct that shows citizenship or a military ID that shows citizenship. A fourth option is a valid government photo ID that 'indicates that the applicant is a United States citizen or if such identification is otherwise accompanied by proof of United States citizenship,' but does not say if a birth certificate would count."

🚨 The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act threatens to disenfranchise millions with strict in person requirements for voter registration.

This will disproportionately impact service members and civilians abroad, making it harder for us to exercise our right to vote.

We must fight against measures that create barriers to the ballot box!

This week, President Donald Trump signed an illegal executive order that threatens to disenfranchise millions of American citizens, undermine data security, and decertify voting systems across the country.

The order overlaps with a pending voter suppression bill called the SAVE Act, which would require every American to provide a document like a passport or birth certificate to register or re-register to vote. These moves could block millions of eligible American citizens from voting and upend voter registration as we know it.

But Trump’s order goes far beyond the SAVE Act. It would give Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency access to voter records in every state. And it would decertify every voting machine in the United States, costing states hundreds of millions of dollars.

"eligible New Hampshire #voters experienced significant roadblocks to participating in the state’s first elections since it enacted a law that requires a birth certificate, passport, or other proof of citizenship to register to vote. The mess provided a preview of the steep hurdles prospective voters across the country will face if Congress passes the #SAVEAct, a bill that will imperil Americans’ ability to participate in elections."

83% of women change their last name when they marry: 69 million American women may not have a birth certificate with their legal name on it and would not be able to use their birth certificate to prove citizenship. The #SAVEAct does not included proof of name change or marriage certificate as acceptable proof of identity.

MyLO · Stop the SAVE ActTake action to opposse the so-called "SAVE" Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility), which has been introduced by House Republicans as HR 22. This Act does the opposite: it is a threat to the voting rights of millions of Americans.

Eight in 10 married women in opposite-sex marriages took their spouse’s last name, and the bill could exclude over 69 million married American women whose names do not match their birth certificate.

The New Republic · The Christian Nationalist Plot to Disenfranchise Women VotersThe SAVE Act, which purports to fend off the phantasmal threat of voter fraud, would throw millions of women off the voting rolls.

This may be a controversial opinion, but my #advice to women getting #married is this: don't change your last name.

Regardless of whether the #SAVEact gets passed, having a maiden name and two married names has become a nightmare for things more mundane than the ability to vote. Like 401(k) roll-overs and loan satisfaction documentation.

I highly, highly recommend keeping your maiden name.
