A. P. Howell
“The Mermaid Who Declined the Sea Witch’s Offer and Is Doing Just Fine, Thanks for Asking”

My latest story is online today at Corvid Queen: “The Mermaid Who Declined the Sea Witch’s Offer and Is Doing Just Fine, Thanks for Asking.” It’s very short and exactly what it says on the tin. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Kelly Sikkema (Unsplash)
This is a weird little piece for me. It’s one of two things that I initially conceived as a comic.1 Note that I am not a comic artist. Or any sort of visual artist. I’ve certainly enjoyed drawing, especially as a kid and young adult, but it’s something I would need to invest lots of time and effort in if I wanted to bring my skills up to snuff. (And that’s something I may do…but if so, it’ll be because I want to do some drawing and have fun, not because I’ve given myself a work assignment.)

Since words-and-pictures were not on the table, I decided to do words-and-stage-directions. When I do this, I tend to think of it less as a script/screenplay format, and more like those dialog-heavy (or -exclusive) shorts by Terry Bisson that appeared so frequently when I was reading Asimov’s in the early ’90s. (There I go dating myself, as well as producing some difficult-to-sell stories.) I usually write conventional prose, but playing with format from time to time can be fun. And as someone who has little personal interest in fanfic, I thought it would be amusing to write a “Little Mermaid” coffee shop AU story.

The other is much longer and weirdly shaped, and it was really just the opening I thought of as a comic. If that thing ever ends up seeing the light of day, it is highly unlikely to have a visual component. ↩︎

#corvidQueen #fantasy #flashFiction #shortStories
