Won't be able to find anything about the visiting carrier though sadly. They can't create tickets for their engineers without me having a contract with them, and the first line only has very basic information. Can't even register on their community portal for the same reason :/

Alright, progress. My home carrier finally explicitly confirmed that they don't have Roaming, so the problem isn't on my side. Sadly no schedule/plans to have it implemented. Best case I only stop receiving calls (honestly for the better perhaps, with all the spam calls, hah), but SMS may still keep working if the visiting carrier supports SMS over signalling. Worst case I won't be able to use it at all, but we'll see.

and (as part of ) in Sweden announced that they will be shutting down and mobile networks on December 1st, 2025. Tre (Three) is expected to be done by end of year as well. At that point 3G will be fully gone, and only will keep their 2G network until end of 2027.

Wie du damals™️ also so um 2009+ herum als gerade #UMTS mit #HSDPA/#HSUPA/#HSxPA das höchste der Gefühle waren, zu annehmbarer Qualität kostenlos durch die Welt skypen konntest.

Auch schon wieder aus und vorbei. UMTS gibt's quasi kaum noch und mit Skype ist im Mai Schluss.

Ehrlich gesagt habe ich nicht die geringste Ahnung wann ich es zuletzt genutzt habe.

Как мы в МТС переходим с 3G на 4G/LTE

Привет, Хабр! На связи Павел Березин из Департамента сети радиодоступа в МТС. С конца 2010-х наша компания разворачивала сети стандарта 3G (UMTS). К началу 2020-х его практически полностью вытеснила более совершенная и современная технология 4G/LTE. Но многие пользователи имели на руках устройства с 3G/2G, поэтому нам приходилось поддерживать устаревающую технологию и добиваться, чтобы UMTS и 4G могли работать совместно. Доля устройств с 3G постепенно снижалась, и сейчас мы готовы к полному отключению устаревшего стандарта. Сегодня расскажем, как мы плавно переводили пользователей на 4G, почему не можем дальше поддерживать устаревшую технологию и как именно пройдет — и уже проходит — окончательное прощание со старым добрым UMTS.

On March 13, 2000, I programmed the first known artwork for #UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) cell phones, which used the then standard #WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) to access the Internet. The title of the work was 'wap.sonnet – microbe.4/wap.art', and among the 30 other files that made up the whole, it included a file called ctrl.base.wml (1.29 kB), which was responsible for controlling and managing the piece.

On May 16, 2011, as part of the ritual deletion of my net art works called Expunction, I deleted the entire wap.sonnet of 17 kB from my intima server, and with it also the ctrl.base.wml file.

The exhibition presents an exposed Toshiba MK2109MAT 2GB 5.4K IDE 2.5″ hard disk drive, loaded with a single, isolated control file, deleted from the server in 2011, but carefully preserved in my archive – ctrl.base.wml.

A #PSA for anyone living, staying, entering or even travelling to/from #Australia:

Apparently, #Australia decided to mandate it's #GSM systems to be shutdown because some #GalaxyBrainChair wanted to yeet #2G & #3G and demand everything to use #4G & #5G when in fact #VoLTE support is spotty at best and #EmergencyCalling oftentimes is explicitly hardcoded to not use #WIFIcalling or VoLTE as providing #triangulation and #LocationData via #SS7 is a desired feature when someone calls EMS, Fire Dept or the Police for help...

  • So essentially #tourists and anyone who hasn't an explicitly fully VoLTE-functional device they tested and verified to also do #EmergencyCalls via VoLTE are fecked with no reception when they need it the most!

  • This WILL KILL PEOPLE!!!

As much as we want to bitch about #GSM & #GPRS / #UMTS being #outdated and #inefficient, there are reasons to at least keep 2G available - ranging from lower power consumption to higher resilience in emergency situations.

  • #NewZealand for example does shutdown non-#EmergencyCalls during severe #Earthquakes so that people trapped and/or in need of urgent assistance can get through to dispatch operators and everyone else has to get in line and take a number aka. use #SMS or if existing #Internet to say "I'm fine!"...

  • If the Ozzies really need that juicy #UHF #SubGHz #Spectrum it's totally feasible to instead change the #allocations and reconfigure #CellularNetworks to use lesser bandwith for 2G (i.e. only keeping the absolute mininum of channels available for any service) and thus clear up space...

And to add insult to injury, Australia passed a #NorthKorea|n-alike #CellPhone #ImportBan for any device that doesn't do i.e. the bespoke proprietary garbage that i.e. #Telstra, #Vodafone and #Optus do with the #baseband modems of their #branded devices...

Seriously, which #TechIlliterate dickhead decided it's a good idea to do that #3Gshutdown in Australia without even a basic 2G network up and running at all?
