Madeleine Morris
I think one of the reasons we ‘libs’ in the rest of the western world are so cautious about taking oaths is because we take them seriously. We are vaguely embarrassed by the over-the-top displays of ‘patriotism’ we see from the US.

Perhaps our discomfort has a deeper cause: perhaps we have always suspected that behind all the flag waving and pledge reciting, is an abyss of degeneracy and vapid apathy. #USPol

“The number of people jailed pretrial has nearly quadrupled since the nineteen-eighties; people with mental-health issues tend to be detained significantly longer than the rest of the population. Today, the nation’s three largest mental-health providers are New York’s Rikers Island, L.A. County’s Twin Towers Jail, and Chicago’s Cook County Jail.”

The New Yorker · Starved in JailBy Sarah Stillman

I had always thought it was Reagan who decided to close residential mental-health facilities and effectively put ill people on the street, on their own.

Today I learned that I was wrong, and that things started much earlier.

I hate how passive aggressive the USA is regarding collective action. They couldn't pass a law banning workers from striking, so they said strikes are totally legal if they're about unfair treatment of workers. They are about unfair[1] treatment[2] aren't they? Oh also you have to do the collective bargaining, and you can't strike until you do. You aren't bad guys who won't even try collective bargaining, are you? You can't strike if you didn't even try it! OK also after collective bargaining then you have to do arbitration, just so we can make sure you absolutely have to strike. Don't worry we told employers very sternly to play nice, while they retain all their power and control during all this. What do you mean you're striking before the 10 year make-sure-you-have-to-strike process? Why are you being so mean?

Trump’s FCC chair threatens Comcast, demands changes to NBC news coverage

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr accused Comcast of "news distortion" because its subsidiary NBC isn't parroting the Trump administration narrative on the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

"Comcast knows that federal law requires its licensed operations to serve the public interest. News distortion doesn't cut it," Carr wrote in a post on X yesterday.
