These gulches, or "kuru" in Finnish, are potential death traps in the winter. Snow gets packed into thick and heavy patches on the sides, and when a skier enters, they might collapse on top of them. I always avoid these like the plague, though they are very pretty to watch. I once met two ski tourers who claimed that they always ski through these and their granny taught them to do so. In my opinion, it's just a disaster waiting to happen.

April is the snowiest month on the Beartooth Front climatologically (for now). Upper low undercutting us over S ID/WY induces a cool moist N-NE upslope flow, generating thick powder. 35-40cm our place so far. Not too bad for our morning hike, and afternoon run/ski, -3C only moderate N wind. Will taper off tonight. Back to 1895 for us thanks to criminal oligarchy. theguardian.com/us-news/2025/a

the pond to our west opened up a few days ago. still some ducks and few geese in it.
oops 😜 required a bit of effort for Sundance to get out of that.
0930 this morning for our walk. pretty much like this all day, sometimes visibility as low as 150m.

these wide open areas west of our 'hood are great for them to play hard 👍
this morning 0930 already 25cm
on my afternoon ski behind our place. they will be much happier Sat. when real melt starts. -1C high today, 3C tomorrow, and 9C Sat.
breaking trail was actually not that bad. have to ease in here to assess moose potential. can't just break and run.
