In observance of #BlackHistoryMonth I am reading If God Still Breathes, Why Can’t I? By Angela N. Parker. https://bookshop.org/a/13969/9780802879264 I chose it for the most prosaic of reasons: the title spoke to me. As a lifelong and severe asthmatic, I’ve often asked God why I can’t breathe. Here is a whole book asking that question!
Exciting as that is, this slim volume is far more than I expected. I am discovering far more shared experiences than I anticipated, given that I am not a Biblical scholar. That just goes to show how complicated every woman’s relationship with the Bible is. Parker’s #book also challenges me in many ways, although few are unexpected. Yet again I am confronting the uncomfortable truth that #women (and #feminism), are often our own worst enemies. We doubt ourselves so much, and spend inordinate time/effort watching our feet so as not to make a misstep, that we are often oblivious to the horizons stretching out before us. We need to look up and breathe. #theology #womanist
