Several weeks ago I attended the kick-off rally for Ernie Klassen, the Liberal candidate for South Surrey-White Rock in today's Canadian federal election, where I took a photo of this flag flying above the crowd. The rally took place at Peace Arch Park, a symbolic place on the border between Canada and the US. I've spoken with Ernie over the course of weeks, and I think he's a good person with genuine concern for his community and his country who deserves the votes of his constituents. And it can't go unsaid that we are facing a particularly virulent surge of extremism in Canada, intimately connected to the fascist movement in the United States.<br>

While all elections are important, some (like the ones in 2021 and 2019, in my opinion) feel fairly normal, as elections go. But this year's election represents a dangerous point for all of us - the danger of annexation, the danger of economic warfare, the danger of rising internal fascism. Some of us will be voting for a better future, while many of us will be voting to hold the line against things getting worse. It's far from perfect, but if we want a better future down the road, we need to get out there and make sure that the Conservative party can't sneak their fascist, undemocratic affinities into government under the cover of trite Canadian politeness.<br>
