#discord IS LITERALLY THE PROBLEM!
It's worse than any #IRC, #Mumble or even the old #TeamSpeak & #Skype for that matter.
It combines the disadvantages of #Forum, #paywalled #documentation, #chat and #voicechat with 0 redeeming qualities (unlike #Zulip & Mumble & #XMPP+#OMEMO) it's just an #InformationBlackhole!
I'm shure fecking #dread has better moderation and I'd rather use #MicrosoftTeams + #Slack cuz those at least have proper #moderation tools.
Case in point: I'd rather #SelfHost all my comms infrastructure than to ever use something like Discord or any other #GDPR-violating SaaS that is just enshittification.
I'd rather recommend people to instead choose a tool that does everything but horrible to go with multiple smaller & good tools

Zulip self-hosted server shows broken looking website despite no errors during installation. Looking for clues and help.
Discord's latest update just put up a floating ad covering part of the UI. You have to watch a video ad, or hover over it long enough for a initially invisible dismiss button to show up. I've been wanting to switch Pallets over to https://zulip.com, this seems like a good reason to. #Discord #Zulip

PS.
Hello Fediverse! o-o.tools is a new hosted service for software teams. We are striving to pull together the best open source alternatives to the big players (Github, Slack, Trello, Confluence, etc) and have bundled Forgejo, Zulip, Vikunja, and An Otter Wiki into one private integrated service. Check us out:
@axbom I too have been doing some similar evaluating of alternatives. I would recommend adding:
- #Zulip (Slack, #Mattermost competitor) More info: https://c.im/@sbb/114034480079879818
- #Conversations/ #Gajim/ #Prosody (is similarly E2E encrypted, but additionally federated, unlike Signal), this is my #XMPP "stack" at present (more info: https://c.im/@sbb/114032786446300932 )
- #DeltaChat (is federated, unlike #Signal) More info: https://c.im/@sbb/114043962394278098
- #flarum , a forum similar to Discourse, but will run on a #RaspberryPi, unlike Discourse
- #calibre-web for your ebook collection
- #shiori, for private cloud bookmarks
Local #Discord server has installed a bot which replaces Twitter links with Nitter, and given people links to join #BlueSky and #Fediverse (via @FediTips).
The usual chuds are complaining that this is "performative" and "won't make a difference". But it's another pebble in the rockslide. Every subreddit, Discord instance etc. which takes a stance counts.
(and maybe they'll migrate from Discord to #Zulip or something too)
Explored Zulip further. There's a lot to like about it. It's very well built, and the documentation is fantastic. I really appreciate all the self hosting and scaling information.
My issue is the UI. I am okay with it, and could use it no problem. I'm looking for parents to use it though, and they're going to have trouble. Everything is too small and noisy.
I've been taking a look at Zulip. There's a lot to like about it. I especially appreciate that it's fully open source, and they have a lot of good documentation on self-hosting.
The topic concept makes it feel like a mix between Slack and a forum. Or like email, but you only get emails from select people.
