So @Beavernotes suddenly appeared in my timeline today ... which is cool.

But I see Beaver Notes is being reviewed in the same way as a lot of other open source projects are. I don't blame BN here, but it's a trend I'm seeing. And it feels quite odd.

First of all, BN is an application for writing text and making notes.

The reviewer states these two points first:

Privacy: All your data is stored on your device.

Offline mode: Allows you to create and edit notes without an internet connection.

I mean ... it's a text editor you install locally on your system. It's the typical functionality of any text editors.

Another thing which also appears in many open source apps is «we don't track you» or «no adds in this app»-

It just makes me sad ... because no tracking and no ads should be the normal situation for any application. And applications not needing to communicate with other services over a network shouldn't need to promote «no network access needed».

It is my strong opinion that applications tracking users, enforcing ads and requiring network access for whatever reason when not strictly needed should be forced to put a large sticker on their application of these unwanted «features». Not the other way around.

“The #Labor MP #JeromeLaxale has expressed his “disappointment” in the #Albanese government’s #failure to restrict #gambling #ads and called on the party to “honour the legacy” of the late #PetaMurphy if re-elected.

Laxale, a left-faction MP who is trying to hold on to the ultra-marginal New South Wales seat of #Bennelong, said he was “sick of seeing betting odds linked to live sport” and told #voters in his #electorate there was “a strong #reform package coming”.

The Albanese government has not taken changes to #gambling #regulation to this election and has faced sustained criticism from #PublicHealth experts and political pressure for shelving plans to restrict gambling ads, in the face of opposition from #sporting codes and #broadcasters.”

The Guardian · Labor MP ‘sick of seeing betting odds’ as he airs disappointment at Albanese government’s record on gambling adsBy Henry Belot

I run uBlock Origin or other ad-blockers in every browser I use.

Sometimes I get the "hey, you're blocking ads, we can't make money" popups. From otherwise agreeable news sites.

Then I think to myself, if you just ran the ads yourself, from your own site, without the adsystem trackers involving Meta/Google/Amazon, then the ads would probably get through.

The ads themselves aren't the problem. It's that publishers want to send all the data and most of the revenue to someone else.

Has this always been a thing on Twitch, or have they recently started doing this? Putting an overlay on the stream advertising their Turbo subscription that doesn't go away unless you click out of it.

My ad blocker doesn't actually block your ads, Twitch. So I have to watch your ads AND deal with this overlay garbage? It's like you are trying to make me stop watching you altogether.

Judge rules Google built illegal ad monopoly, DOJ threatens another breakup

The DOJ has recommended that the company sell Chrome and decouple it from Android. Google might also be forced to sell Android. Additionally, the company faces similar antitrust action in Canada, the UK, the European Union, China, India, and Japan.
