The next 4 years will be rough for non-believers. In LA County there are a few UU locations, but two other groups I highly recommend is Atheists United and Sunday Assembly LA. They each have a bit of a different vibe which could be good for those who have religious trauma in their personal history. One of these groups may fit your vibe better than the others. I would encourage folks try all three to see. - I Went to Church...and Liked it! - youtu.be/ZmSiYQ_VmKM?si=I9A1W8 #atheist #atheism #NonreligiousNews #GoodWithoutGod #agnosticism #Secular #SecularHumanism #Humanism #AgnosticAtheist #NonBelievers #UnitarianUniversalism #UU #KristiBurke

ACTUAL CONVERSATION WITH MY FATHER-IN-LAW:

HIM: 'Hey, what the hell is META?'
ME: 'Meta, like M-E-T-A? That's just Facebook'
HIM: 'Oh... well, why don't they just call it Facebook?'
ME: 'Who knows why rich assholes do what they do? Why?'
HIM: 'Did you hear, Zuck is saying you can call trans people mentally ill there now? How do you feel about that?'
ME: 'You know me. I don't like bullies. It's pretty messed up.'
HIM: 'I though you might say that. So, I got a question.. you don't think they are?'
ME: 'What, mentally ill? Uhhh... no. I think they need to be left alone though.'
HIM: 'Okay, but wouldn't you say ....... gender dysphoria is a mental illness?'
ME: 'Well, I'm not an expert, but I would say... no. I think it's a symptom of something you can't control... Do you think being delusional is a mental illness?'
HIM: 'Right, exactly. Being delusional is a mental illness.'
ME: 'Some would say Christians are delusional, if you think about it.'
HIM: 'Oh, no. That's different.'
ME: 'You don't think it's delusional to believe in an all-powerful sky-daddy who can control your life and even punish you when you do bad stuff?'
HIM: 'Uhhh, I guess... some might see it that way... but there are a LOT of Christians. There are a lot more Christians than there are trans people, right?'
ME: 'Maybe, so what? Who has all the power, trans people or Christians?'
HIM: 'Huh... well obviously Christians do.'
ME: 'Right, so what if trans people had the power in society and Christians were ridiculed. Would it be okay to call them delusional or would that be bullying?'
HIM: 'I get your point... okay, well I just wanted your take on it.'
ME: 'I appreciate that. I really do.' ☮️

Among the great unanswerable questions in a complex universe that exists on a scale beyond understanding, the truth of what a dog is thinking when they're looking at you with their soulful eyes is almost certainly unknowable, but this also means that it's entirely possible that they're hearing Vicki Lawrence singing "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" in their furry heads in every waking moment. Can we ever prove otherwise?

Loved your reply!

Your use of the #Agnosticism tag leads me to think you may be under a misconception. Or you may not be; it's hard to tell.

I'm an agnostic atheist. I can't claim to know (agnostic), but I also don't believe (atheist).

If the answer to the question "Do you believe that a god exists?" is "no," then you're an atheist, whether you're gnostic or agnostic about knowing if the claim for existence is true.

[Forgive me if I'm preaching to the choir.]

@tomcapuder I'm what you might call a cultural Christian, meaning I grew up celebrating Christmas, Easter, and, of course, Halloween—the most spiritually significant of all holidays, where we honor the ancient ritual of trading fun-sized Snickers for temporary social acceptance. Now, I suppose I could become a true believer, but it would require some specific terms.

First, I’d need Jesus to do something practical, like a mass brain upgrade for humanity—something along the lines of installing Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics in each nervous system. That way, we could all stop worrying about free will and start focusing on not hurting each other, which I think would be a significant improvement for society.
And, just as a small aside, I’d also need him to multiply my bank account. If he’s already in the miracle business, why stop at loaves and fishes when compound interest is there, waiting to be blessed?

The abortion issue is a hot button issue right now, but I think a lot of people misunderstand what the goals of the Evangelical Americans actually are.

It's never been about saving babies. It's ALWAYS (since before the book was written) been about controlling women. Ever since the first sheep-fucker was rejected by a woman and became the first 'incel,' religion has been about controlling what women do with their bodies and who they have sex with. The idea of 'assigning' women to men is not new to this generation.

They want to end abortion as an option, they want to eliminate access to contraceptives and they want to criminalize the actions of non-compliance.

They want to eliminate women having SEX outside of marriage completely, so they MUST get married and be virgins before they can attempt to procreate. Any situation that makes men unnecessary (gay marriage, for example) will be outlawed.

Think about that for a minute. Gloria Steinem famously said: "If men could get pregnant, there would be an abortion clinic on every corner." I have no doubt in my mind this is true and if it's 'not all Christians' then the 'good ones' need to step forward right now and say so or I'm just going to assume ALL Christians are weird freaks. ✝️
