Across the country, politicians are pushing a dangerous narrative that conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism. This false equivalence is not only wrong — it undermines genuine efforts to combat hate.
Legitimate criticism of government policies, including Israel’s, is a fundamental right in any democracy. Students, activists, and scholars are now being silenced, threatened, or labeled antisemitic simply for expressing solidarity with Palestinians or questioning U.S. support for Israel’s actions.
This dangerous crackdown has reached Congress. During recent hearings, Senator Bill Cassidy and other lawmakers used accusations of antisemitism to attack student protesters and intimidate universities. Rather than addressing the real threat of antisemitism, they weaponized the charge to suppress dissent.
Let’s be clear: Antisemitism is a real and urgent problem that must be condemned. But criticism of Israeli government policies is not the same as antisemitism.
We can and must stand against hate without undermining free speech and silencing dissent.
