I've started another experiment with closed ecosystem in a jar. Three weeks in, it appears stable, I have some greenery, lovely snails - most hatched already within the jar, a hydra, a very active black speck I am unable to identify or photograph, small worms, and some tiny crustacean friends (copepods, daphnia, ostracods)...

I am surprised how happy it makes me to just watch those little guys go about their business.

Before coming to the conference I knew basically nothing about freshwater mussels. So that session was a real eye-opener. Here are some freshwater mussel facts.

- 300 species in North America. 75+ in Missouri.
- Among the most imperiled species in the U.S.
- They are parasites! I had no idea.
- So many unique ways of “infesting” host fish including luring them, and grabbing
- Garment buttons used to be made from their shells. Many modern day buttons are still made to look like them.

PLA bioplastics, a type of plastic made from plant-based materials, are often touted as a greener alternative to conventional plastics. However, a new study shows that PLA bioplastics, such as reduced growth, reproduction, and survival, can negatively impact aquatic life. The study suggests that PLA bioplastics are not as eco-friendly as they seem and that more research is needed to assess their environmental effects.
