Water is less dense as a solid than as a liquid, causing ice to float. This ensures that aquatic life can survive beneath the icy surface of lakes in winter, maintaining a habitat.
Bet ypu didn't know the Duck River in #Tennessee is the most biodiverse fresh #water river in America.

Fish are schooling in the canal, hanging around in the sun. Some have vertical stripes. The big one is about 30cm.
They're hard to spot with the reflection of the trees and blue sky on the water, but once you see them, you realise there are dozens.
Loss of oxygen in bodies of #water identified as new #tippingpoint
#Aquatic #deoxygenation as a planetary boundary and key regulator of Earth system stability
I've started another experiment with closed ecosystem in a jar. Three weeks in, it appears stable, I have some greenery, lovely snails - most hatched already within the jar, a hydra, a very active black speck I am unable to identify or photograph, small worms, and some tiny crustacean friends (copepods, daphnia, ostracods)...
I am surprised how happy it makes me to just watch those little guys go about their business.
Before coming to the conference I knew basically nothing about freshwater mussels. So that session was a real eye-opener. Here are some freshwater mussel facts.
- 300 species in North America. 75+ in Missouri.
- Among the most imperiled species in the U.S.
- They are parasites! I had no idea.
- So many unique ways of “infesting” host fish including luring them, and grabbing
- Garment buttons used to be made from their shells. Many modern day buttons are still made to look like them.

As Ocean Oxygen Levels Dip, Fish Face an Uncertain Future
Global warming not only increases ocean temperatures, it triggers a cascade of effects that are stripping the seas of oxygen.
Fish are already moving to new waters in search of oxygen, and scientists are warning of the long-term threat to fish species and marine ecosystems.

Manta rays under water

Three Manta rays swimming under water in the shade of some beach trees, in a laguna created by the side of the Caribbean Sea. I took my travel photo at the Xcaret Ecological Park on the Riviera Maya, Mexico, in the Cancun area.
PLA bioplastics, a type of plastic made from plant-based materials, are often touted as a greener alternative to conventional plastics. However, a new study shows that PLA bioplastics, such as reduced growth, reproduction, and survival, can negatively impact aquatic life. The study suggests that PLA bioplastics are not as eco-friendly as they seem and that more research is needed to assess their environmental effects.
