Cars are too heavy and too fast. All cars should be required to have speed restriction devices on them to keep the speed under 30 kph. Cars don't need to weigh 3 tons to move a single lazy idiot and a bag of groceries. GPS and modern electronic control units could easily restrict cars from exceeding the speed limit. #TrafficViolence #CarBrain

If you simply raise prices so high that people must borrow in order to access basic goods and services, then you can also collect rents on their obligatory borrowing. For example: 1) The state makes jaywalking a crime and builds car-dependent infrastructure, forcing everyone to purchase cars in order to access basic facets of life. 2) Car sellers can raise prices on cars, which are now obligatory to own. 3) Lenders can then extend credit to purchasers to finance these obligatory cars, collecting free rents off this artificial obligation. 4) Car sellers and lenders then merge, allowing the same capitalist to profit off the inflated sale price and your inability to pay for that inflated price out of pocket. #capitalism !

I just got my fag packet [spreadsheet] out and reckon I probably spent about 0.8 hours a day on the car last year adding together working to cover purchase and operating costs as well as time spent driving the damn thing, and I averaged around 17 miles travelled per hour spent - largely thanks to it being ancient (so purchase price spread over many years) and cheaply run, and my being on a reasonable income, so I spend less time working to pay for it. For someone who often pootles along a little below the limit driving for economy, apparently I’m a “fast” driver!

But seriously, almost an hour a day spent on something I don’t even want. Again, #FFS.

I’ve been reading Lynn Sloman’s “Car Sick” and though 20 years old it still has a lot of relevance.
I’m quite taken by this diagram.

A diagram of two halves, marked “advantages” and “disadvantages”. Each half has four circles in it forming a grid for “now” or “later” on the x axis and “to me” or “to others” on the y axis.
All of the advantages are in “now”/“to me”, and are “easy to transport goods and people, I can travel to otherwise inaccessible places, I don’t have to plan ahead, a car offers access to new opportunities: social, education, jobs”
Disadvantages has:
To others/now “intimidates people cycling or walking, kills and injures people”/later “climate change, leads to closure of local shops and services, loss of commmunity bonds or social glue, countryside and communities harmed by road building”
To me/now “driving is stressful, it takes up time, it costs a lot of money” /later “leads to closure of local shops and services, loss of commmunity bonds or social glue, driving makes me fat”.
Underneath are the words “Figure 3: The advantages and disadvantages of cars”

This may be “pragmatic” but beside the opposition’s complaint that it “doesn’t help industry enough” it prolongs and worsens the damaging effects of ICE vehicles - and allows a “cliff edge” approach that will be used in a few years to undermine the transition by painting it as unachievable. Oh, and if you build cars for rich people you can just carry on making them as polluting as you like.

I suppose once only rich people have ICE cars at least we’ll be able to bring the fuel duty escalator back, right? Right??
