These agave are found only in the Chihuahuan Desert. Creston BunchA view of the Rio Grande from the eastern side of Big Bend National Park. I like this view because of the sharp contrast between the verdant river and the arid desert behind it. In the distance you see the Chisos mountains. 60 million years ago the Chisos mountains were a single huge volcano, larger than anything today. It violently exploded and left behind a mountain range in the middle of the desert. As you ascend the mountains, the hot desert becomes a cooler, wetter forest. Creston BunchBoquillas Canyon in Big Bend National Park. The river is the Rio Grande. On the other side is Mexico. The cliffs are the Sierra del Carmen mountains, a vast and inaccessible nature preserve. This picture is the result of 120+ million years of geologic activity. Humans have only been here for the last 8,000 years or so. The water was very still, which made for great reflections, and a tranquil spot to do some of my own reflection.
