The classic [0] #Dune #BoardGame is a deep, intricate, highly evocative rendering of the story, in the form of a thrilling negotiation-and-betrayal game.
Best to set aside a whole afternoon to play. And, in 1980s game style, also be prepared for it to suddenly end early when someone sneaks a win.
Not in our case, though! There were some close calls, but the early attempts to win failed by a hair, leaving the field changed and ready for new schemes and machinations.
We played the full (“advanced”) rules, which was definitely the right choice: The designers have poured effort into enabling the lore and set pieces from the book, and the full rules are needed to get all that.
The second photo here captures a particularly climactic moment.
Two “Battle Plan” devices are laid in the foreground, determining the result of a battle in Habbanya Ridge sietch: the two battle leaders, Beast Rabban of the Harkonnen, and Chani of the Fremen, are revealed each to be a traitor in the service of the opponent! Both sides lose utterly: leaders and forces dead, the territory now unclaimed by either faction.
The game continued. (The Fremen won eventually, on turn 6.)
[0] The game was published by #AvalonHill in 1979, and ever since then has had a passionate fan base despite long being out of print. The re-release in 2019 by #GaleForceNine changes very little, and makes “classic Dune” available for everyone again.
