This is a short documentary on Konnakol, the rhythm language of South Indian Carnatic #Music. During my #Ethnomusicology studies I took lessons in tabla, which has a different rhythm language called Bol used for reciting cycles and compositions, though I find Konnakol, which I got into with kanjira, a little bit more flexible, e.g., internalising a fast 9/8 (2+2+3+2) by saying "takadimitakitajuna", or playing around with rhythm without needing an instrument. #MusicTheory

The ramkie, AKA blik kitaar or oilcan #guitar is an #instrument from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Malawi. First mentioned in 1730 among the Khoekhoe, it derives from a lute, possibly the nanthuni, brought to the Cape by slaves from Malabar, southwestern India. Originally it had a gourd body, which later was replaced with an oilcan or similar. The name ramkie likely derives from the Portuguese rabaquinha (little violin).

Kyorei (empty bell) is generally regarded as the oldest piece within honkyoku #shakuhachi repertoire, thought to originate in 9th century China. The piece is organised according to long-breaths rather than a set duration or metric structure. It's both simple and incredibly challenging due to the long notes, which reveal technical imperfections in sound production and breath control. In short, a great study for players of any level.

A Tuvan song about longing, wishing to visit friends/lovers across the mountain, but the pass is steep, and there's no level road. The pass was cleared and road built in 1933-34. I'm playing it here on doshpuluur.

What is the first thing you think of when hearing "Silk Road"?
For me: mulberry. Because of the silkworm's highly specific diet of primarily white mulberry leaves, mulberry trees were planted in silk producing regions, but also elsewhere for exporting to silk producers. Its wood became widely used to build musical instruments; from the Cretan lyra to the Japanese biwa. This video shows the build process of a tar, starting of course with a mulberry log.
