Burroughs 101
This American Life host Ira Glass was never into William Burroughs. Didn't get why people love his writing so much. Then he heard this radio story that changed all that, partly because it wasn't very reverential about Burroughs. For Burroughs 101st birthday, we hear that story.

Iggy Pop, the documentary's narrator, begins by listing some of the artists and artistic movements influenced by Burroughs: Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Steely Dan, Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed; punk, heavy metal. We hear from director John Waters on the impact on him of Burroughs' open homosexuality and frankness about sex. Others talk about Burroughs' heroin addiction and obsession with guns and weapons. Burroughs shot his wife to death in what he said was a terrible accident.

I’m very behind reading fiction magazines, about a year behind in fact. Interzone 297 was up to its usual exacting standards, with some excellent non-fiction (although, am I alone in NOT wanting book reviews to include a detailed synopsis?) Fav story: ‘Lights of the New World’ by Paul E. Franz

I now have every print issue of #Interzone - I lost some over the years, and some looked like they went mouldy. The last missing one, which arrived recently, was issue 210 (June 2007), still celebrating the 25th anniversary. Bruce Sterling wrote in that issue:-
"25 years ago, the idea of writing Texan cyberpunk manifestos for a British post-new-wave radical-hard-sf mag with a circulation of dozens in glorious black and white..."

How things have changed

After over 3 decades (including two lifetime subs), my #Interzone subscription has ended, and I don't see the point in renewing. I managed to finish two stories in about the last 10 issues, and I didn't find those 2 all that interesting. I don't think I ever got over the departure of #DavidPringle

At the same time, I'm re-reading the first "Dangerous Visions" anthology by #HarlanEllison . I still remember some of the stories, decades after I last read it.

“…frozen forever in a final meaningless posture.” #interzone #williamsburroughs

August saw me dipping back into the work of a number of authors whose work I've loved for decades; and one of those was William S. Burroughs. Although it's a looong time since I read his best-known works, he's actually appeared on the blog more times than you might think as I've dipped into some of his tangential writings on several occasions.

Did you learn anything in particular collaborating with William Burroughs?

The most important thing I learned from him was second person. I did some tours with him, and he was always going [adopts austere Burroughs voice]: “You people. You think that …” He wasn’t talking like a writer does about “I” or an essay about himself. He was talking about “you”, which was very challenging and interesting. He came to clubs because he loved reading and the audience became “you”. It was a fabulous device which I’d never really thought about, but he taught me how to do it.

Don't get too much into personal stuff outside of , but Vivian and yours truly stopped by a Popeyes while on a run to get a load of shithouse fixtures, and shared a shrimp combo. It was good and we are happy. The midget was with us, but she had already scammed a corn dog and consequently was not hungry. Now back to our regularly scheduled polemic and insanity.
