I mean, I appreciate that there's a DE tailored for people who've never used a COMPUTER before. I used to laugh at that and say that there's no such animal, but nowadays, plenty of young folks have been inculcated in iBrainrotOS and honestly do NOT know how to use a computer.

But when your apps force your narrow viewpoint on me when running in KDE (particularly CSDs), absolutely kindly go make love to thyself.

I'd much rather that #KWin forced a titlebar on top of the CSD apps. I don't care if that looks ridiculous; it SHOULD be ridiculous.

Argh, </rant>

But seriously, have a wonderful day, Gnome peeps. Make awesome apps. And maybe listen to crazy ranty nerds like me about a quarter of the time. Not more, not less.

it was my birthday yesterday, and i already used up my once-yearly super powerful magic birthday wish. now that it's no longer my birthday, i can make regular, non-magical wishes, which are unfortunately far less likely to come true, but are not as rare.

my wish is that #KDE's #dolphin file manager handles "open XYZ folder in your file browser" requests by opening a new tab in the current window rather than opening a new window.

if anyone knows of a #kwin rule or something to do this automatically... i will send you a FREE copy of a king crimson meme i made several months ago

Auf der #KDE-Mailingliste erschien vor 2 Tagen ein Beitrag, der informierte, dass #KDEs #Fenstermanager und #Compositor #KWin in zwei Komponenten kwin_wayland und kwin_x11 aufgeteilt wurde. Der Code ist zwar getrennt, aber beide Komponenten können gemeinsam installiert werden, sodass ein Wechsel von Wayland zu X11 und zurück weiterhin gewährleistet bleibt, sofern die Distributionen beide Komponenten anbieten.

Den X11- und Wayland-Code haben die Entwickler jetzt komplett separiert und damit das Ende der X11-Unterstützung in Plasma 7 vorangetrieben. Der Quellcode der KWin-Variante mit X11-Unterstützung steckt ab sofort im Repository https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin-x11. Die Wayland-Fassung wiederum beherbergt das Repository https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin. Die Namen sind dabei Absicht: Tatsächlich bezeichnen die Plasma-Entwickler den Wayland-Compositor nur als „kwin“ und empfehlen Distributionen, das Programm in ein entsprechend benanntes Paket zu stecken. Zur besseren und expliziten Unterscheidung hat sich in der Praxis jedoch die Bezeichnung „kwin_wayland“ etabliert – die übrigens auch das Plasma-Team an vielen Stellen selbst verwendet. Die KWin-Fassung für X11 firmiert hingegen offiziell als KWin/X11 oder kurz „kwin_x11“. Auch nach der Code-Trennung lassen sich kwin_x11 und kwin_wayland gleichzeitig installieren. Distributionen können folglich frei wählen, ob sie nur kwin_wayland oder beide KWin-Fassungen ausliefern. Letzteres geschieht beispielsweise schon seit längerem unter openSUSE; Anwender können so einfach zwischen einer X11- und einer Wayland-Sitzung wechseln. Die Tage von kwin_x11 sind allerdings gezählt: Bereits jetzt erhält der Fenstermanager für X11 keine neuen Funktionen mehr. Fehlerkorrekturen sollen zukünftig zuerst in kwin_wayland einfließen und dann auf kwin_x11 „zurückportiert“ werden. Pflegen will das KDE-Team kwin_x11 zudem nur noch bis zum Erscheinen von Plasma 7 – die Desktop-Umgebung würde dann nur noch Wayland unterstützen. Wann allerdings Plasma 7 erscheint und somit kwin_x11 ausgemustert wird, hat das KDE-Team noch nicht verraten. Orientiert man sich an den bisherigen Zeitabständen zwischen den großen Releases, könnte das noch einige Jahre dauern.

Про миграцию на Wayland.
Последние пару лет у меня Xorg оставался на машинах из-за Simple Desktop Display Manager (SDDM).
Несколько месяцев назад #SDDM таки ушёл на #Wayland и больше #Xorg не используется, можно удалять.

  • Пару лет назад претензии к Wayland были, но скорее к его поддержке окружениями и софтом.
  • С год назад почти не осталось нареканий к работе десктопов с Wayland, что не могло напрямую с ним работать, то вращалось через его Xwayland.
  • Последние же месяцы поддержка и переход софта состоялись в полном объёме.

Если что-то из софта потеряло функциональность, вынужденно работая через #Xwayland на тех системах, где нет Xorg, то в этом софте ментейнеры довольно быстро реализовал поддержку Wayland.
Однако, пошло это лишь тогда, когда дистрибутивы стали использовать Wayland в качестве основного GUI-сервера.

Не фанат Wayland, просто #X11 сам по себе и Xorg крайне небезопасны и категорически не способны сделать безопасный десктоп для пользователя. А потому и неизбежен переход на Wayland, альтернатив нет.

И в тоже время, комично наблюдать как толпы жалуются, что якобы Wayland плохой\сырой и т.д. так и не вкурив, о необходимости переключать софт на работу с ним.

Например, можно в /etc/environment вставить:

QT_WAYLAND_TEXT_INPUT_PROTOCOL=zwp_text_input_v2
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1
QT_QPA_PLATFORM="wayland;xcb"
SDL_VIDEODRIVER="wayland,x11"

Перезагрузиться и тогда уже составлять впечталение о работе десктопа с Wayland’ом.

Для контроля работы через #Xwayland можно запустить:

qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.showDebugConsole

Если всё хорошо, то там может не быть ни одного приложения в «X11 Windows» — значит все напрямую через Wayland работают:

...A word of warning ⚠️

If you encounter an issue with #KWin crashing after upgrading to #Plasma6 6.3, please do not report it to me, but to the KDE Devs on the Bug Reporter bugs.kde.org. It's a Plasma issue not a #XeroLinux one.

I cannot fix it. Temporary fix would be to press *F12* for *Yakuake* and type this `systemctl --user restart plasma-plasmashell.service` followed by enter key until issue is fixed 😉
