Rob Pegoraro<p><strong>A spring gardening surprise: green leaves instead of green&nbsp;shoots</strong></p><p>So much is <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">terrible</a> in the world right now, but at least I’m not looking at lettuce as a grocery line-item expense on the first day of spring. That’s not because I’ve renounced leafy greens as a <a href="https://robpegoraro.com/2015/02/20/lenten-lunch-challenge-crafting-sandwiches-without-cold-cuts/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">sandwich fixing</a>, but because the spinach and some of the arugula that I grew from seed in the fall somehow survived winter. </p> <a href="https://robpegoraro.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/spring-spinach.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"></a> <p>Alongside them in the <a href="https://www.sunset.com/garden/backyard-projects/ultimate-raised-bed-how-to" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">raised bed</a> outside the back patio, parsley and, even less likely, cilantro have staged their own late-winter resurrections.</p><p>I can’t imagine why even the most fault-tolerant of these plants should have done that. This winter, unlike <a href="https://robpegoraro.com/2020/02/21/this-weak-excuse-for-a-winter/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">many in recent years</a>, not only had extended hard freezes but multiple <a href="https://robpegoraro.com/2024/01/19/i-still-like-living-in-a-place-with-distinct-seasons/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">snow days</a> that left that bed buried in snow for days at a stretch. Even <a href="https://www.almanac.com/how-build-cold-frame" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">building a cold frame</a> should have been inadequate. </p><p>Having done nothing to prolong those crops, I should have had to start from scratch about two weeks before today, scattering dirt and seeds and looking forward to seeing the first green shoots emerge from the soil later this month. </p><p>(To anybody reading this intimidated by the idea of starting a vegetable garden: It’s hard to screw up arugula in the spring, and it’s also hard to find a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/recipes/?q=arugula" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">recipe</a> that can’t be improved with a little of it.) </p><p>Instead, after <a href="https://robpegoraro.com/2024/07/20/twenty-years-is-a-long-time-in-one-house/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">20 years</a> of having this questionably-productive hobby, I now need to decide if want to dig up some of these survivors to try growing some lettuce to mix things up. And if this means that my long <a href="https://robpegoraro.com/2024/12/26/2024-gardening-scorecard-abundant-arugula/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">losing streak of trying to cultivate tomatoes</a> might be due for a change in a couple of months. This unearned gardening luck is not much in the larger scheme of things, but I’ll take it. </p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/arugula/" target="_blank">#arugula</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/cilantro/" target="_blank">#cilantro</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/gardening/" target="_blank">#gardening</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/kitchen-garden/" target="_blank">#kitchenGarden</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/lettuce/" target="_blank">#lettuce</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/march/" target="_blank">#March</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/overwinter/" target="_blank">#overwinter</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/seasons/" target="_blank">#seasons</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/spinach/" target="_blank">#spinach</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/spring-equinox/" target="_blank">#springEquinox</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/thyme/" target="_blank">#thyme</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/vernal-equinox/" target="_blank">#vernalEquinox</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://robpegoraro.com/tag/winter/" target="_blank">#winter</a></p>

Tom<p>The geraniums are greening up slowly after being under the lights for a week. I&#39;ve turned the lights down some since the lettuce seemed to be suffering as it got taller. The grape cutting from last year that had a verbena I saved in it is growing fast! The saved Red Marconi isn&#39;t doing much but I haven&#39;t fertilized or pruned it either. Extra details in ALT about tent and LED lights.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/geraniums" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>geraniums</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/verbena" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>verbena</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/lettuce" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>lettuce</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowLights" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrowLights</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowTent" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrowTent</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LedGrowLights" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LedGrowLights</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CCBYNCND" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>CCBYNCND</span></a></p>
Tom<p>Some of the replanted California Wonder 300 peppers have sprouted. It looks like it&#39;s last years seeds so what I saved must be duds. Probably should have did a germination test on everything. Everything else is doing good.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SeedStarting" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SeedStarting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/peppers" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>peppers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/basil" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>basil</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/lettuce" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>lettuce</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LedGrowLights" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LedGrowLights</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/March15" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>March15</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CCBYNCND" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>CCBYNCND</span></a></p>

Tom<p>Cleaned up the geraniums and pruned them a tiny bit and put them in the grow tent. These were reduced to gallon pots for the winter this year. Last year I lost some leaving them bare root. It&#39;s just too dry for that and I don&#39;t have damp cellar.</p><p>Lettuce is doing ok, maybe too much light seems a bit burned on some parts of the leaves. Verbena still blooming, saved Red Marconi still too cool to do much or it needs fertilized.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/geranium" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>geranium</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/lettuce" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>lettuce</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LedGrowLights" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LedGrowLights</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CCBYNCND" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>CCBYNCND</span></a></p>

Tom<p>Indoor growing and seed starting update. The lettuce is growing fast and one pot makes about two nice sized bowls of salad. Most of the basil has sprouted except the Thai and Holy Green. All the Jalapeno and Red Marconi pepper pots sprouted, none of the California Wonder bell pepper did so I replanted with some fatter seeds to see if maybe it was a seed maturity issue.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SeedStarting" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SeedStarting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/peppers" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>peppers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/basil" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>basil</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/lettuce" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>lettuce</span></a></p>
