I don’t post that much about hobbies, but right here is what we woodturners call a wood gloat.
This is a pile of Boxwood ( Buxus sempervirens ). One of my neighbors had it removed today.
Boxwood is a very slow growing, fine grained wood. The name is sort of a give away about it’s uses.
The wood is hard enough to accept threads, so a twist off top for a box to hold snuff, pills, or other small objects.
This boxwood bush came from the oldest home in the neighborhood, constructed in the late 19th century
An easy age estimate by looking at the diameter of the trunk might be 100 years The max diameter is about 14 inches.
Stuff like this usually comes from old plantations, city gardens, or old estates.
Not once in a lifetime, but a very lucky find.
And in the background there are some fairly big Dogwood branches I got yesterday.
