The worldbuilding is considered & smart, and her characters are always horny for each other (often, newlyweds).</p><p>Didn't expect a mystery, but this was fun. Initially annoyed by all the cocktail recipes, but she persuaded me to seek out complex flavors of the non-alcoholic variety (my preference). Till Westermayer<p>In Kürze dann also Weihnachtsferien – ein guter Zeitpunkt, um nochmal drauf zu gucken, was ich seit dem letzten Post aus dieser Reihe gelesen (und angeschaut) habe. </p>
<p>Angeschaut eigentlich vor allem zwei Serien: Die <i>Ringe der Macht</i>, also die – naja – Verfilmung von Tolkiens Silmarillion. Mir hat das ganz gut gefallen, gab aber wohl auch ganz andere Reaktionen darauf. Und <i>Babylon 5</i> – <a href="https://blog.till-westermayer.de/index.php/2022/11/22/babylon-5-neu-entdeckt/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">dazu hatte ich ja schon ausführlich geschrieben</a>. Inzwischen bin ich gut eine Staffel weiter, die Geschichte hat mehrere unerwartete Wendungen genommen, sich für eine Serie aus den 1990er Jahren aber erstaunlich gut gehalten. Falls jemand zwischen den Jahren nichts vor hat …</p>
<p>Dann zu den Büchern.</p>
<p>B.L. Blanchards <i>The Peacekeeper</i> (2022) ist eine Detektivgeschichte mit allem, was dazugehört – nur dass sie ungefähr in der Jetztzeit mit entsprechender technologischer Ausstattung auf einem nordamerikanischen Kontinent spielt, der nie kolonisiert wurde. Hat mir sehr gut gefallen.</p>
<p>Auch <i>The Spare Man</i> (2022) von Mary Robinette Kowal ist ein Detektivgeschichte. Diese spielt auf einem Kreuzfahrt-Raumschiff (mit gewissen Anklängen an Douglas Adams‘ Raumschiff Titanic), das sich auf der Reise von der Erde zum Mars befindet. Wie auch bei Kowals Lady-Astronaut-Reihe ist dieses Raumschiff recht realistisch gezeichnet, so gibt es etwa unterschiedlich schnell rotierende Schwerkraftbereiche. Auf dieser Luxus-Raumfahrt mit entsprechend wohlhabenden Charakteren gibt es einen Mord. Der Partner der nach einem Unfall körperlich beeinträchtigten Erzählerin ist ein Detektiv, der sich zur Ruhe gesetzt hat – eigentlich ideal geeignet, um all das aufzuklären. Nur wird er schnell selbst verdächtigt. Neben dieser Jet-Set-Detektivgeschichte spielen auch ein Hund und Cocktails eine große Rolle. Sehr unterhaltsam. </p>
<p>Bleiben wir im Weltraum: <i>The Vela</i> (2019) von Yoo Ha Lee, Becky Chambers, River Solomon und S.L. Huang ist eine zuerst als Serie herausgekommene Space Opera in einem interessanten Setting: ein Sonnensystem, in dem fehlgeschlagene großtechnische Experimente dazu geführt haben, dass die Sonne nach und nach ausgeht – und die eigentlich bewohnten und bewohnbaren äußeren Planeten lebensfeindlich werden. Deren Bevölkerung flieht ins innere Sonnensystem; hier wird das Schicksal der äußeren Planeten weitgehend ignoriert. Vor diesem Hintergrund kommen das Kind eines Politikers von einem der inneren Planeten und eine Ex-Militär, die es schon lange von den äußeren zu den inneren Planeten verschlagen hat, zusammen – sie sollen ein für eine politische Inszenierung gebrauchtes Flüchtlingsraumschiff wiederfinden. Und natürlich steckt sehr viel mehr dahinter. </p>
<p>Ebenfalls Space Opera: <i>The Red Scholar’s Wake</i> von Aliette de Bodard. Rice Fish, die Frau der namensgebenden getöteten Anführerinnen des „Roten Banners“ (einer Gruppe von Weltraumpirat*innen) heiratet aus politischen Gründen eine bei einem der Raubzüge aufgegriffene Schrottsammlerin oder Tüftlerin, Xích Si. Ach ja, Rice Fish ist ein intelligentes Raumschiff, genauer gesagt, ein Mensch-Raumschiff-Hybrid. Und aus der professionellen Partnerschaft wird schnell mehr. Nach und nach wird klar, dass die Pirat*innen zwischen den beiden das Xuya-Universium dominierenden Mächten – die sich an vietnamesischen bzw. chinesischen Ursprüngen orientieren – aufgerieben werden sollen. Die vorherigen Geschichten aus diesem Setting von de Bodard waren eher Novellen oder Kurzgeschichten – für mich hat die Ausdehnung auf die längeren Raum gut gepasst.</p>
<p>Mit <i>Invisible planets</i> (2016) habe ich auch einen von Ken Liu herausgegebenen Kurzgeschichtenband gelesen – der Band versammelt einen Querschnitt durch die aktuelle chinesische SF-Szene mit stilistisch sehr unterschiedlichen Texten, die von eher cyberpunk-artigen Welten bis zu eher märchenhaften Geschichten reichen. Ein interessanter Einblick, ergänzt durch Essays zur Rolle von SF in China.</p>
<p>Schwer zu beschreiben, was Rachel Pollacks <i>Unquenchable Fire</i> (1994) genau ist – jedenfalls außergewöhnlich genug, um als Masterwork of SF neu aufgelegt zu werden. Ich würde sagen: eine humorvolle Allegorie auf die Geburt Jesu‘ in einer zumindest heidnischen USA, in deren Vorstädten die jetzt verpflichtenden Gebräuche und Rituale trotz aller bürokratischen Kontrolle aber doch eher Oberfläche sind. Die ganz gewöhnliche Jennie Mazdan findet nach einem Erweckungserlebnis heraus, dass sie vaterlos schwanger ist – und dummerweise sind sie und ihre ungeborene Tochter zu Größerem berufen. Neben ihrer Geschichte sind immer wieder surreale Mythenfetzen in das Buch eingewoben. Sehr seltsam, und für meinen Geschmack etwas zu umfangreich. Auf die Fortsetzung habe ich dann verzichtet.</p>
<p>Ganz anders <i>The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet</i> (2010) von David Mitchell, ein minimal mit fantastischen Elementen angereicherter Roman, der den Weg des Niederländers Jacob de Zoet im Japan des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts beschreibt – die Ostindiengesellschaft ist die dominierende Weltmacht, Japan hat sich abgeschottet, der Handel findet über die Exklave Dejima vor der Stadt Nagasaki statt. Die See- und Kaufleute sind ein wilder (und sklavenhaltender) Haufen, in dem der gottesfürchtige De Zoet erst einmal seinen Platz finden muss. Er lernt Orito Aibagawa kennen – eine Hebamme aus der japanischen Oberschicht, die beim Arzt der niederländischen Kolonie studiert. Die sich anbahnende Liebesgeschichte wird jäh unterbrochen – und wir sind mittendrin.</p>
<p>Nicht zuletzt sehr unterhaltsam, aber eher leichte Lektüre: die drei Bände der Dr. Greta-Helsing-Reihe von Vivian Shaw, beginnend mit <i>Strange Practice</i> (2017) – urban fantasy über London, Paris, Rom und Marseille, mit menschenscheuen Vampir-Adligen, den alltäglichen Problemen von Mumien und Kobolden und ähnlichem mehr. Greta Helsing ist als Ärztin auf die zwischen uns lebenden Monster und deren Leiden spezialisiert – und wird ein ums andere Mal in größere Geschichten hineingerissen.
