neddyoToday/Tonight: 2 shows at Union Pool.Afternoon free show in the front room, first off-kilter folk from Ezekiel Healy, then heavy effects-laden violin constructions from Laura Ortman.Then back this evening in the venue proper for a solo set from Woods' Jeremy Bradley Earl. Straight through, zero chit-chat, songwriting + some cool use of backing tracks and a few choice guitar solos. Crazy good big band that included M Halvorson, P Brennan, T Fujiwara + more. neddyoTonight: one of my favorite things to hear from a jazz/jazz-adjacent band as they take the stage: we're not gonna stop playing. That was the case tonight at the Stone, controlled chaos from four musicians on an ever-wobbling highwire. Drummer Kate Gentile with Matt Mitchell on piano, Jeremy Viner on sax/clarinet and Kim Cass on bass. neddyoTonight: I had to check, but it's been 15 years since I was last in Zankel Hall, which is a shame, because it's a beautiful room. Cool show celebrating Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra 25th birthday. Special guest John Medeski (and Vernon Reid) a nice addition for a couple songs. Such a killer band, sounded great, although the show kind of fell flat for me towards the end. I think it was the setting and the crowd. neddyoTonight: Close Up is where the youngs play jazz and also where the youngs go to see jazz. Pleasant set from Jeong Lim Yang playing with Jon Elbaz on piano and Jon Starks on drums. Pretty straightforward except when it wasn't. Some surrealist moments. Such a great spot, though, gonna start going there more often.
