Last year I volunteered to try to fix my sons scout troop’s pinewood derby setup, it’s from 2001, and had a broken lane and we got bad time readings half the time. It took forever! (I got a thread about this somewhere.)
After 10 months of procrastinating and preparing to do a major wiring overhaul, I had it fixed in 20 minutes with some hot glue and bending of sensors.

It’s #pinewoodDerby race day!
We have four cars, but only my daughter’s is in the scout class. Pre-race inspections passed.
My old car, “Unknown”, had some issues during inspection. It was made with only 3 wheels touching. I had to bend the axel, as my dad epoxied in the axels. I didn’t want to, but I wanted to race it.
Since it’s rainy, and tomorrow is the #pinewoodDerby I’ve decided to pack the cars in desiccant so pull the moisture out of the wood. Then after weigh in, they’ll sit on a table for a few hours absorbing the humidity, and hopefully getting heavier.
Is it cheating? Kinda. It feels like a boxer trick. But as someone said, “If you ain’t cheat in’, you ain’t racin’!”
Will this actually do something? Probably not. The cars are already painted, so the moisture can only be gained/lost through the bottom, and it’s a pretty slow process.
However, I have seen them gain a few hundredths of ounces overnight, so maybe!
I’m definitely going to weight them after the race.
Best fit yet! I ended up making my own model, but I think the secret was to use the thicker 0.20mm setting. I think it resulted in a more rounded top rim on the studs. I still went with 5mm stud diameter, but I think the roundness on that top layer made the interface better.
I used to think being in the highest-placing rank for a race was a good thing because big number = better. Then I found out I lost the pinewood derby thing in 3rd grade or something. I blame him for being bad at #physics and making me lose.
Never thought I’d be a #CubScout mom, but here I sit working on a #PinewoodDerby car with my son after taking a fairly challenging hike with his #Pack30 this morning.
My drone motored pinewood derby car was silly fast. I neglected to consider the force of impact with the backstop though. I got 3 runs before my starting trigger messed up. You can see this first run dislodged the battery case from the frame.

Ok car is fully assembled , I'm not too optimistic about the wheels spinning well though I will get some of the graphite to speed it up. The car looks very good though has a lot of mistakes and imperfections in my decorating work , but I still think it should be one of the better looking cars #pinewoodderby
