Councillors demand fair funding deal for transport schemes in Carmarthenshire

In chairing a scrutiny committee debate on the Draft Regional Transport Plan for South-West Wales, Cllr Madge agreed that Carmarthenshire has not been getting its fair share of government funding for transport schemes in the county.

Cabinet member Cllr Aled Vaughan Owen told the committee that the Labour Welsh and UK governments were not delivering transport improvement for the people of Carmarthenshire. “They have the money and they should be using that for schemes in places like the Amman Valley,” said Cllr Owen.

Plaid Cymru’s Cllr Colin Evans from Ammanford said that the closed Amman Valley railway should be brought back into use as a passenger service. “There’s been talk about this for about 30 years. But nothing practical has been done about it. It could be an important transport artery.”

Cllr Neil Lewis said: “If we want better bus and train services, and new relief roads for economic development, we need investment. We’re not getting any at the moment.” He then proposed that a letter should be sent to the Labour governments in Cardiff and London demanding a fair share of the HS2 railway funding. “To classify a railway from London to Birmingham as an England and Wales project means we’ve missed out on Barnett consequential funding of £4b for Wales.”

In seconding the proposal, Cllr Gareth Thomas slammed the UK Govt for refusing to provide the extra billions Wales should be getting. “The Labour party in power is taking no notice at all of us here in Carmarthenshire. It’s totally pointless to discuss transport plans if we don’t get the money to deliver them. The funding that’s due to us would enable that to happen.”

In supporting the proposal, Labour’s Cllr Kevin Madge agreed with Plaid Cymru members. “We’ve got to try and make sure that we get our fair share, and we haven’t had our fair share. I totally agree with that,” he said.

Members of the Place, Sustainability & Climate Change Scrutiny Committee on Friday (14 March) voted unanimously to support the Plaid proposal calling for fair funding from the two Labour governments.

Happy St David's Day to everyone in Wales. Still wondering whether Scotland or Wales will achieve independence first. Either way if I am still alive I will travel to Wales to join the celebrations on independence day and if we are first I hope many Welsh people come to Scotland to join our celebrations.

Carmarthenshire MP steps down from County Council

First elected as a councillor for the Llanddarog constituency on Carmarthenshire County Council in 2017 representing Plaid Cymru, Ann was later appointed as the Executive Board Member for Communities and Rural Affairs for the county council in 2021.

Following her re-election for a second term in 2022, the Executive Board was revamped, with Ann becoming the Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Community Cohesion and Planning Policy.

Serving in this role for a further 2 years, Ann stepped down from Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet in August 2024, following her election to the House of Commons as the MP for the newly created constituency of Caerfyrddin.

Ann Davies MP said: “It has been an absolute privilege to have had the opportunity to represent the villages and communities of the Llanddarog Ward as their County Councillor for the past 8 years and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over this time. However now is the time for me to step down so that I can dedicate all my energy to representing communities across the Caerfyrddin constituency in Westminster as their MP.”

Ann added: ““I am offering my full support and endorsement to Shone Hughes, who has lived in Llanarthney for a number of years and is active in the local community. I know that Shone would make an excellent County Councillor and would be a passionate representative for the Llanddarog Ward.”

Cllr. Alun Lenny, Chair of Plaid Cymru Caerfyrddin added: “It has been a pleasure to work with Ann both as a fellow Councillor and member of the Cabinet. I know first-hand the excellent work she has accomplished in both roles. On behalf of the Plaid Cymru Group on Carmarthenshire County Council, I wish her the very best as she continues her superb efforts in fighting for Caerfyrddin in Parliament.”
