At first, I tried to frame the seagull without that distracting boat roof - ideally catching it in some dramatic pose, maybe wings raised or something like that. But the longer I look at this shot, the more I like it just the way it is. The intense red, rusty, slightly grimy roof really pops, and the gull’s self-assured, slightly inquisitive stare at its portrait-taker is perfect. This might be the only photo of this particular gull in existence - her fifteen seconds of fame, and she seems to know it.

Hey, fisherman, I hope you caught something!

He mentioned at the hut the previous evening that he’d barely packed any food. Must’ve been day three or four on Stewart Island’s North West Circuit when we passed him casting his line. This was back in April ’93 - there I was lugging a 28kg backpack, blissfully unaware of ‘ultralight hiking’. At least I didn’t have to worry about starving, unlike him. After ten days, we were back in Oban, stuffing ourselves with chocolate and cookies. But on the return trip to the South Island by hydrofoil, I did start to feel a bit queasy.

Crocus II

The next morning, I just had to go back to that meadow. My wish for dew-covered, closed crocuses came true.

Of course, my perpetual theme - perception and interpretation - rears its head here: you’d never know from these pretty photos that this meadow sees a lot of canine traffic. Let’s just say, I had to cut my session short and step away for some fresh air. 😐

Crocus I

I couldn’t resist this meadow. My wife pointed it out and insisted I simply had to photograph it. Normally, I’m pretty laid-back, but I managed to rally my inner sloth - and it was absolutely worth it. So much so that I’m going to share a few shots. 😊

Two distant planes look about to collide, yet they're actually far apart. Photography flattens reality onto a single plane, making the photographer’s perspective and our own assumptions crucial. Our eyes see only in two dimensions, relying on the brain to fill in the third. Even two eyes can’t reconstruct true depth here - parallax is too small. In the end, every image is an invitation to interpret what we see.

Somewhere in the #Pyrenees, mid-1998, during our cycling trip. This was pretty much the last time I shot photos on slide film. For once, I didn’t add the grain - on the contrary, I even reduced it a bit.

The following year, I bought my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 950, boasting an incredible 2 megapixels. But hey, we all know it’s not about the megapixels, right?

My contribution to the #52WochenFotoChallenge on the theme of #StreetArt.

I stumbled upon this piece yesterday while visiting my parents in my hometown (not a city, just a small village!). Since I wasn’t sure if I was even allowed to publish this photo, I first had to look into what’s known in Germany as 'Panoramafreiheit' (freedom of panorama). And yes, as far as I understand, publicly placed permanent works can be shared (§ 59 UrhG). Phew, lucky me!
